Saanane Island National Park is tucked within the shimmering waters of Lake Victoria, Saanane Island National Park is a unique, compact park located right in the heart of Mwanza, Tanzania. It’s the only national park in Tanzania situated within a city and entirely surrounded by water—making it an ideal escape for wildlife lovers, birders, and day trippers.

The park is named after Mzee Saanane Chawandi, a pioneering conservationist who originally used the island as a zoo in the 1960s. His mission was to promote wildlife conservation awareness through education and recreation.
In 2013, the area officially became Saanane Island National Park, under the management of TANAPA (Tanzania National Parks Authority).
Unlike Tanzania’s vast savannah parks, Saanane offers a more intimate and relaxed wildlife experience with stunning lake views. It’s small in size but rich in biodiversity.
Key highlights include:
Though small, the park is home to various mammals and reptiles, alongside a variety of birdlife.
Fishing is not allowed within park boundaries, which helps preserve the lake’s biodiversity.
Saanane is more than just a safari—it’s a leisure and adventure experience.
The park is just a 10-minute boat ride from Mwanza’s city center, and boats leave from the TANAPA office at Capri Point.
Best time to visit:
It’s open daily from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Park entry is affordable, with lower rates for residents and East African citizens.
Saanane Island is ideal for a half-day or full-day trip, especially if you’re already visiting Mwanza or exploring western Tanzania. Combine it with trips to Rubondo Island National Park, Serengeti, or even Burigi-Chato National Park.
Travel tips:
Whether you’re a wildlife enthusiast or simply want to unwind by the water, Saanane offers a rare blend of nature, city proximity, and lake adventure—all in one unforgettable stop.
