12 Days Uganda Rwanda Safari Adventure
Discover the extraordinary wildlife, breathtaking landscapes and cultural heritage of East Africa on this unforgettable 12 Days Uganda Rwanda Safari Adventure. This carefully designed journey combines mountain gorilla trekking in Rwanda and Uganda, chimpanzee tracking in Kibale National Park, wildlife game drives in Queen Elizabeth National Park and peaceful lakeside experiences at Lake Kivu and Lake Bunyonyi.
Uganda and Rwanda are two of Africa’s most rewarding safari destinations. Both countries are celebrated for their endangered mountain gorillas, rich primate populations, beautiful mountain scenery and welcoming communities. Traveling through both destinations allows you to experience the similarities and differences between their landscapes, wildlife habitats and conservation programs.
Your adventure begins in Kigali, Rwanda’s attractive capital city, before continuing north to Volcanoes National Park. Here, you’ll explore the mist-covered slopes of the Virunga Mountains in search of mountain gorillas and discover the cultural traditions of communities living near the park.
One of the main highlights is the opportunity to encounter a habituated mountain gorilla family in Volcanoes National Park. Accompanied by experienced ranger guides and trackers, you’ll walk through bamboo forests and mountain vegetation before spending approximately one hour observing these remarkable primates.
You’ll also have the choice of tracking golden monkeys or undertaking the Dian Fossey tomb hike. Both experiences provide a different perspective on the Virunga Mountains, whether through wildlife observation or the history of mountain gorilla conservation.
The safari then continues to Lake Kivu, where beautiful waters and surrounding hills provide a peaceful setting for relaxation. A guided boat excursion introduces you to the lakeside scenery, while a proposed island or coffee experience offers insight into Rwanda’s agricultural traditions.
After exploring Rwanda, you’ll cross into southwestern Uganda and visit Lake Bunyonyi, a picturesque highland lake surrounded by terraced hills. The lake is famous for its scenic islands and peaceful atmosphere, making it an excellent destination for a relaxing boat excursion.
From Lake Bunyonyi, the journey continues to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, one of Africa’s most important mountain gorilla habitats. A second gorilla trekking experience provides an extraordinary opportunity to encounter these endangered primates in a different forest ecosystem.
Experiencing gorilla trekking in both countries is particularly rewarding for wildlife enthusiasts. Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park is characterized by volcanic mountain landscapes, while Uganda’s Bwindi is known for its dense, ancient forest and rugged hills.
Following the gorilla encounters, you’ll travel north through the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park. This region is famous for its tree-climbing lions, although sightings depend on the animals’ movements and cannot be guaranteed.
Queen Elizabeth National Park offers a completely different safari environment from the mountain forests. Its savannah plains, wetlands, crater landscapes and waterways support elephants, buffaloes, antelopes, hippos, crocodiles and a wide variety of bird species.
A morning game drive in the Kasenyi area and an afternoon boat safari along the Kazinga Channel provide opportunities to observe wildlife from both land and water.
The final major destination is Kibale National Park, widely recognized as one of Uganda’s leading chimpanzee trekking destinations. Here, you’ll enter tropical forest in search of habituated chimpanzees before exploring the nearby Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary.
The journey concludes with a scenic transfer to Kampala or Entebbe, bringing together 12 days of extraordinary primate encounters, beautiful scenery, wildlife experiences and cultural discovery.
This itinerary is particularly suitable for couples, wildlife photographers, small private groups and travelers seeking a comprehensive Uganda and Rwanda gorilla safari. It can be customized with luxury, mid-range or budget accommodation according to your preferences.
12 Days Uganda Rwanda Safari Adventure Highlights
The most remarkable feature of this safari is the opportunity to enjoy two mountain gorilla trekking experiences, one in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park and another in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Each trek offers a different forest environment and an unforgettable encounter with endangered mountain gorillas.
The safari also includes an introduction to Rwanda’s history through Kigali sightseeing and a visit to the Gorilla Guardians community initiative, historically known as Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village.
Golden monkey tracking or the Dian Fossey tomb hike adds another dimension to the Volcanoes National Park experience. The choice allows travelers to focus on wildlife photography or the history of mountain gorilla research.
Lake Kivu and Lake Bunyonyi provide scenic relaxation between the more physically demanding trekking activities. Both lakes are surrounded by beautiful hills and offer opportunities for guided boat excursions.
In Queen Elizabeth National Park, you’ll search for elephants, buffaloes, Uganda kob, lions and other wildlife during game drives. The Ishasha sector is particularly associated with tree-climbing lions.
The Kazinga Channel boat safari offers excellent opportunities to observe hippos, waterbirds, crocodiles and other animals along the shoreline.
Kibale National Park provides a third major primate experience through chimpanzee trekking, while Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary introduces you to a community-supported conservation area known for birds and smaller primates.

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali and Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
Your 12 Days Uganda Rwanda Safari Adventure begins in Kigali, the capital of Rwanda. Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, or following pickup from your hotel, you’ll meet your professional safari driver-guide. After introductions, your guide will explain the planned route, trekking arrangements and accommodation for the coming days.
Depending on your arrival time, begin with a guided Kigali city tour. Rwanda’s capital is set across beautiful hills and valleys, offering an attractive introduction to the country. The city combines busy commercial neighborhoods, cultural attractions and important historical landmarks.
Visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial
One of Kigali’s most important historical attractions is the Kigali Genocide Memorial at Gisozi. The memorial commemorates victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi and provides exhibitions explaining the history of the tragedy and its lasting consequences.
A visit offers meaningful context for understanding modern Rwanda. Visitors should allow time to explore the exhibitions respectfully and reflect on the country’s history.
If your schedule permits, continue to a local craft market or cultural center. Here, you’ll discover Rwandan handicrafts, artwork and products made by local artisans. The market experience provides a different perspective on everyday life in the capital.
Scenic Drive to the Virunga Mountains
After lunch, leave Kigali and travel northwest toward Volcanoes National Park. The drive generally takes approximately two to three hours, depending on traffic and the location of your lodge.
The road winds through Rwanda’s famous rolling hills, passing agricultural landscapes, rural settlements and green valleys. As you approach Musanze, the imposing peaks of the Virunga Mountains gradually become visible.
Volcanoes National Park forms part of the Virunga Massif, a mountain ecosystem shared by Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Its bamboo forests and montane vegetation provide important habitat for endangered mountain gorillas.
Arrival and Gorilla Trekking Preparation
Arrive at your selected lodge and check in. Spend the evening relaxing after your journey and enjoying the surrounding mountain scenery.
Your guide will explain the following morning’s gorilla trekking arrangements. Prepare your hiking boots, long trousers, waterproof jacket, gloves and daypack. Because trekking begins early, enjoy dinner and rest well.
Accommodation: Mountain Gorilla View Lodge or Volcanoes Lodge (Luxury); Le Bambou Gorilla Lodge or La Palme Hotel (Mid-range); Muhabura Hotel (Basic).
Meal plan: Dinner, with earlier meals according to arrival arrangements.
Day 2: Mountain Gorilla Trekking and Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village
Today brings one of the most extraordinary wildlife encounters in Africa. You’ll enter Volcanoes National Park to search for endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.
Wake early, enjoy breakfast and collect your packed lunch before traveling to Kinigi Park Headquarters. Here, authorized ranger guides explain the regulations governing gorilla trekking in Rwanda and organize visitors into trekking groups.
Gorilla Trekking Briefing and Forest Walk
Standard trekking groups normally contain no more than eight tourists. Each group is assigned a habituated gorilla family, with park authorities managing the allocation according to the day’s circumstances.
After the briefing, travel to your designated starting point and begin the forest walk. The trail may pass through farmland before entering dense bamboo and mountain vegetation.
Gorilla trekking can be physically demanding. Some groups locate their gorillas after a relatively short walk, while others spend several hours navigating steep, muddy or uneven terrain.
Experienced trackers help locate the animals by monitoring their movements. Your ranger guide will explain the surrounding environment and manage the pace of the trek.
One Hour With Mountain Gorillas
When the gorilla family is located, you’ll normally spend approximately one hour observing the animals. This carefully managed viewing period helps protect the gorillas while allowing visitors to experience their natural behavior.
You may see a powerful silverback resting among the vegetation, females feeding nearby or young gorillas playing together. Their interactions reveal the remarkable social relationships within a mountain gorilla family.
Remain calm, maintain the required distance whenever possible and follow all ranger instructions. Flash photography is prohibited, and visitors must never touch or feed the gorillas.
After the encounter, return through the forest and meet your driver-guide. Depending on the trek’s duration, enjoy your packed lunch during or after the activity.
Afternoon Cultural Experience
If time permits, visit the Gorilla Guardians community initiative, historically known as Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village. This community-based tourism experience introduces visitors to traditional Rwandan music, dance, crafts and aspects of local heritage.
The experience also highlights how responsible tourism can support livelihoods around protected areas. Community initiatives create opportunities for local residents to benefit from conservation and tourism.
Because gorilla trekking times vary, the cultural visit may need to be shortened or rescheduled if you return late from the forest.
Return to your lodge for dinner and overnight.
Accommodation: Same selected lodge near Volcanoes National Park.
Meal plan: Breakfast, packed lunch and dinner.
Day 3: Golden Monkey Tracking or Dian Fossey Hike and Transfer to Lake Kivu
After yesterday’s mountain gorilla encounter, your safari continues with a choice between two rewarding activities in Volcanoes National Park. You may track golden monkeys in the bamboo forests or undertake the Dian Fossey tomb hike.
Both experiences begin with an early breakfast and an official park briefing. Your preferred activity must be confirmed in advance because the permits, physical demands and duration differ.
Option One: Golden Monkey Tracking
Golden monkeys are distinctive primates known for their golden-orange coloring, expressive faces and energetic movements. They inhabit bamboo-rich areas of the Virunga Mountains and provide a fascinating contrast to mountain gorillas.
Accompanied by ranger guides, you’ll enter the forest to locate a habituated golden monkey group. The animals often move rapidly through bamboo vegetation, feeding on shoots and interacting with other members of the troop.
The experience is especially appealing to wildlife photographers. Their quick movements make observation exciting, although clear photographs may require patience.
Option Two: Dian Fossey Tomb and Karisoke Hike
Travelers interested in conservation history can choose the hike to the area associated with Dian Fossey’s former Karisoke Research Center and her grave.
Fossey established the research center in 1967 and spent many years studying mountain gorillas. Her pioneering work helped increase international awareness of the need to protect the species.
The hike passes through mountain vegetation and can be physically demanding because of steep slopes, altitude and muddy trails. It generally requires more time and effort than golden monkey tracking.
Read more about Dian Fossey’s legacy and the history of gorilla conservation in the Virunga Mountains.
Scenic Transfer to Lake Kivu
After completing your selected activity, return to the lodge for lunch and prepare for the journey west toward Gisenyi on Lake Kivu.
The drive passes through attractive countryside, with green hills, farms and rural communities. Lake Kivu is one of Africa’s Great Lakes and forms part of Rwanda’s western border with the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The original itinerary mentions visiting the King’s Palace Museum and Murambi Genocide Memorial during this transfer. These attractions are located in southern Rwanda and are not practical stops on the direct Musanze-to-Gisenyi route. They can be arranged separately on an extended itinerary.
Arrive at Lake Kivu and check in. Enjoy the peaceful lakeside atmosphere before dinner.
Accommodation: Lake Kivu Serena Hotel (Luxury); Palm Garden Resort (Deluxe/Mid-range); Paradise Malahide (Budget option in the original itinerary).
Meal plan: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Day 4: Lake Kivu Boat Ride and Nyamirundi Island Coffee Experience
Wake to the peaceful atmosphere of Lake Kivu and enjoy breakfast at your hotel. Today offers a relaxing change of pace after the mountain trekking activities of the previous days.
Lake Kivu is surrounded by green hills, fishing communities and beautiful bays. Its scenery makes it one of Rwanda’s most attractive destinations for relaxation and water-based activities.
Guided Boat Excursion on Lake Kivu
After breakfast, meet your boat guide for a scenic excursion. Before departure, your operator should provide a safety briefing and appropriate life jackets.
As the boat travels across the lake, enjoy views of the surrounding hills, islands and lakeside settlements. Depending on the route, you may see fishing boats and communities whose livelihoods are closely connected to the water.
The boat excursion is particularly appealing to photographers because of the attractive scenery and changing reflections across the lake.
Proposed Nyamirundi Island Visit
The original itinerary includes a visit to Nyamirundi Island for an introduction to Rwanda’s coffee-growing traditions. The exact island access, boat route and availability of a guided coffee experience should be confirmed with a local operator before travel.
Rwanda is known internationally for producing high-quality Arabica coffee. Where a suitable coffee visit is available, travelers can learn about cultivation, harvesting, processing and the people involved in the industry.
Such experiences provide insight into the country’s agricultural economy and the importance of coffee production to local communities.
Afternoon Relaxation
Return to your hotel for lunch and spend the afternoon at leisure. You may relax beside the lake, enjoy the hotel facilities or arrange an optional guided activity.
Kayaking, cycling and community excursions may be available through local operators. Any water-based activity should be undertaken with appropriate safety equipment and experienced guides.
Enjoy dinner and another peaceful night at Lake Kivu.
Accommodation: Same selected Lake Kivu hotel.
Meal plan: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Day 5: Transfer From Lake Kivu to Lake Bunyonyi in Uganda
Today your Uganda Rwanda safari adventure continues across the international border into southwestern Uganda. After breakfast, check out of your Lake Kivu hotel and begin the journey toward Lake Bunyonyi.
The route passes through northern Rwanda’s beautiful countryside before reaching the designated border crossing. The most suitable crossing and road route will be selected according to current border operations, your nationality and the location of your accommodation.
Crossing From Rwanda Into Uganda
At the border, complete the necessary immigration and customs procedures. Your guide will assist with the practical arrangements, but each traveler must carry a valid passport and appropriate entry authorization.
Depending on nationality and itinerary, an East Africa Tourist Visa may be suitable. Eligibility and entry conditions must be confirmed before travel.
After entering Uganda, continue toward the Kabale region. The landscape is characterized by steep hills, terraced farms and attractive valleys. Southwestern Uganda is sometimes described as the Switzerland of Africa because of its mountainous scenery.
Arrival at Lake Bunyonyi
Lake Bunyonyi is one of Uganda’s most scenic highland lakes. Its calm waters, surrounding hills and numerous islands create a peaceful atmosphere.
Arrive at your selected lodge and enjoy lunch according to your travel schedule. The remainder of the afternoon is reserved for a guided lake excursion if sufficient time remains.
Afternoon Boat Ride
Explore Lake Bunyonyi by boat with an experienced local guide. The excursion offers views of the lake’s islands, terraced hillsides and surrounding communities.
The lake is also known for its birdlife, making it attractive to travelers interested in nature photography and quiet scenic experiences.
Depending on the operator and route, your guide may share stories about the islands and the communities living around the lake.
Return to your accommodation for dinner and overnight.
Accommodation: Arcadia Cottages (Higher-category option); Bunyonyi Overland Resort (Mid-range); Bunyonyi Overland Camp (Budget). Confirm the current property names and room categories when booking.
Meal plan: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Day 6: Scenic Transfer From Lake Bunyonyi to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Enjoy breakfast overlooking Lake Bunyonyi before beginning the journey to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Today takes you deeper into southwestern Uganda, where cultivated hills gradually give way to forested mountain landscapes.
Bwindi is one of Africa’s most important habitats for endangered mountain gorillas. Its dense vegetation, steep valleys and rich biodiversity make it a remarkable destination for wildlife enthusiasts.
Journey Through the Kigezi Highlands
The drive passes through the scenic Kigezi region, known for its terraced hills and agricultural communities. Depending on the selected route, you may travel through small towns and rural villages before approaching the forest.
The exact journey time depends on the sector in which your Uganda gorilla permit has been issued. Bwindi has several trekking sectors, including Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo, and these are not interchangeable when planning accommodation.
For this original itinerary, the accommodation examples are mainly associated with the Buhoma area. If your permit is issued for another sector, the lodge and transfer arrangements should be adjusted accordingly.
Arrival at Your Bwindi Gorilla Lodge
Arrive at your selected accommodation and check in. Enjoy lunch if your travel schedule permits, followed by a relaxed afternoon overlooking the surrounding forest or hills.
Bwindi’s landscape differs from Volcanoes National Park. Rather than volcanic bamboo slopes, you’ll encounter a dense montane forest with an extraordinary variety of vegetation and wildlife.
Preparing for Uganda Gorilla Trekking
Your guide will explain tomorrow’s trekking arrangements and confirm the designated briefing point. Prepare your hiking boots, waterproof jacket, long trousers, gloves, drinking water and packed lunch.
Uganda gorilla trekking can involve steep trails and thick vegetation, so adequate preparation is important. Porter services may be available to assist with carrying your daypack and providing support along difficult sections.
Enjoy dinner and rest early before the next day’s adventure.
Accommodation: Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp, Mahogany Springs or another suitable luxury lodge; Buhoma Lodge or Lake Kitandara accommodation where currently available (Mid-range); Buhoma Community Rest Camp or another confirmed budget property. Gorilla Resort and Wagtail Eco Safari Camp are historical examples that require current availability verification.
Meal plan: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Day 7: Mountain Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Today brings your second mountain gorilla encounter, this time in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Although you’ve already experienced gorilla trekking in Rwanda, Bwindi offers a different forest environment and another opportunity to observe these remarkable primates.
Wake early, enjoy breakfast and collect your packed lunch before traveling to the designated park briefing point. The location will correspond to the trekking sector indicated on your Uganda gorilla permit.
Gorilla Trekking Briefing
Uganda Wildlife Authority ranger guides explain the regulations governing gorilla trekking. Visitors learn about health precautions, safe behavior around gorillas and the importance of respecting their natural habitat.
Standard trekking groups generally contain no more than eight visitors. Each group is allocated a habituated gorilla family, with assignments managed by the park authorities.
Visitors should communicate any relevant mobility concerns before the trek. Although guides may consider individual circumstances, no particular trekking distance or difficulty can be guaranteed.
Exploring Bwindi’s Ancient Forest
After the briefing, begin walking through Bwindi’s dense vegetation. The forest contains towering trees, thick undergrowth and steep slopes that create a distinctive trekking environment.
The duration of the trek depends on the location of the assigned gorilla family. Some groups locate the animals relatively quickly, while others spend several hours walking through challenging terrain.
Experienced trackers help locate the gorillas and communicate with ranger guides. Along the way, your guide may explain aspects of Bwindi’s vegetation, wildlife and conservation significance.
Encountering a Gorilla Family
Once the gorillas are located, you’ll normally spend approximately one hour observing their natural behavior. This encounter may reveal different social interactions from those witnessed in Rwanda.
A silverback may rest quietly while younger gorillas play nearby. Females may feed or care for infants, offering memorable opportunities to observe the family’s social relationships.
Maintain the required separation distance whenever possible, follow ranger instructions and avoid sudden movements. Flash photography is prohibited, and touching or feeding gorillas is not allowed.
After the viewing period, return through the forest and meet your driver-guide. Depending on the trekking duration, enjoy your packed lunch during or after the activity.
Afternoon Relaxation
Return to your lodge for a well-deserved rest. Spend the afternoon relaxing and reflecting on the remarkable opportunity to experience mountain gorilla trekking in both Rwanda and Uganda.
If you return early, a suitable optional community activity may be arranged, but the schedule should remain flexible because trekking duration is unpredictable.
Accommodation: Same selected Bwindi lodge.
Meal plan: Breakfast, packed lunch and dinner.
Day 8: Transfer From Bwindi to Queen Elizabeth National Park Through Ishasha
After breakfast, leave Bwindi and travel north toward Queen Elizabeth National Park, one of Uganda’s most celebrated wildlife destinations.
The journey introduces you to a different landscape. Dense mountain forest gradually gives way to open savannah, woodland and grassland, creating new opportunities for wildlife viewing.
Exploring the Ishasha Sector
Depending on your Bwindi accommodation and the selected route, enter Queen Elizabeth National Park through the Ishasha sector. This region is especially famous for its tree-climbing lions.
Lions in Ishasha are sometimes observed resting in the branches of fig trees and other suitable trees. Their behavior has made the area one of Uganda’s best-known wildlife destinations.
However, sightings are never guaranteed. Lions move naturally through the landscape, and their location depends on weather, prey availability and other conditions.
During the game drive, you may also encounter Uganda kob, topi, buffaloes, elephants and other wildlife associated with the savannah ecosystem.
Wildlife Viewing Along the Ishasha River
The Ishasha River and surrounding habitats support a variety of wildlife. Depending on the route and conditions, you may observe animals near the river or in the surrounding grasslands.
Enjoy lunch at a suitable location before continuing toward the northern section of Queen Elizabeth National Park.
Transfer Toward Mweya and the Kasenyi Region
Continue through the park toward your selected accommodation. The journey may include additional wildlife viewing opportunities, although driving time depends on road conditions and the lodge’s location.
Arrive in the late afternoon or evening and check in. Enjoy dinner and prepare for tomorrow’s game drive and boat safari.
Accommodation: Mweya Safari Lodge or Jacana Safari Lodge (Luxury, depending on operating status and location); Queen Elizabeth Bush Lodge or another suitable mid-range property; Simba Safari Lodge (Budget). Historical properties such as Hippo Hill Camp should be verified before inclusion.
Meal plan: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Day 9: Morning Game Drive and Kazinga Channel Boat Safari
Today is dedicated to exploring the remarkable wildlife and scenery of Queen Elizabeth National Park. The combination of a morning game drive and an afternoon boat safari provides opportunities to observe animals in different habitats.
Morning Game Drive in Kasenyi
Wake early and enjoy breakfast before setting out with your safari driver-guide. Early morning is often a productive time for wildlife viewing because temperatures are cooler and many animals are active.
The Kasenyi plains are known for their open grasslands and concentrations of Uganda kob. These antelopes attract predators, including lions, making the area an important wildlife viewing destination.
During the game drive, you may encounter elephants, buffaloes, warthogs and a variety of antelope species. With favorable conditions and some luck, you may also see lions, hyenas or other predators.
Your guide will help identify animals and explain their behavior, habitat and relationships within the savannah ecosystem.
Exploring the Katwe Crater Landscape
Depending on the day’s schedule, continue toward the Katwe area to appreciate the park’s volcanic crater landscapes.
The region contains striking crater formations and scenic viewpoints. These geological features provide insight into the volcanic history that shaped parts of western Uganda.
Some viewpoints overlook lakes, grasslands and distant mountain scenery. Stops should be planned according to road conditions and the timing of the afternoon boat excursion.
Afternoon Boat Safari on the Kazinga Channel
After lunch, proceed to the departure point for your Kazinga Channel boat safari. The channel connects Lake Edward and Lake George and is one of the most rewarding places for water-based wildlife viewing in Uganda.
Hippos are frequently seen in the water, while buffaloes and elephants may approach the shoreline to drink or cool themselves. Crocodiles may also be observed resting along the banks.
The channel supports impressive birdlife, including African fish eagles, kingfishers, herons, pelicans and other water-associated species.
Because the boat travels along the waterway, visitors can often observe animals from a different perspective than during a game drive. The experience is especially attractive to photographers and birdwatchers.
Return to Your Safari Lodge
After the boat excursion, return to your lodge and enjoy the evening at leisure. Reflect on the contrast between the dense mountain forests of Bwindi and the open wildlife landscapes of Queen Elizabeth National Park.
Accommodation: Same selected lodge in Queen Elizabeth National Park.
Meal plan: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Day 10: Transfer From Queen Elizabeth National Park to Kibale National Park
After breakfast, leave Queen Elizabeth National Park and begin the journey toward Kibale National Park, one of Uganda’s leading destinations for chimpanzee trekking.
The drive passes through attractive countryside, with views of crater lakes, cultivated hills and rural communities depending on the selected route.
Scenic Journey Through Western Uganda
As you travel north, the landscape changes from savannah and open woodland toward the greener agricultural areas surrounding Fort Portal and Kibale.
Western Uganda is known for its tea plantations, fertile farmland and beautiful crater lake scenery. These landscapes create a rewarding road journey between the two national parks.
Depending on the schedule, you may stop for photographs, refreshments or a scenic viewpoint along the route.
Introduction to Kibale National Park
Kibale National Park protects a rich tropical forest ecosystem and is especially famous for its chimpanzees. The park also supports numerous other primates, birds and forest wildlife.
The forest is an important conservation area and offers visitors the opportunity to learn about primate behavior in a natural environment.
Arrive at your selected lodge in the afternoon and check in. Enjoy lunch or refreshments according to your travel schedule.
Optional Nature Walk
If time permits, take a gentle guided walk around the lodge or an appropriate nearby nature area. This provides an opportunity to appreciate the surrounding vegetation and listen to forest birds.
Any walk inside a protected area must be arranged through the appropriate authorized guides and park procedures.
Return to your lodge for dinner and prepare for tomorrow’s chimpanzee trekking activity.
Accommodation: Primate Lodge Kibale (Luxury); Chimpanzee Forest Guesthouse or another suitable mid-range lodge; a confirmed budget guesthouse in the Kibale region. The historical Chimp’s Nest option requires verification of current operations.
Meal plan: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Day 11: Chimpanzee Trekking in Kibale and Bigodi Wetland Walk
Today offers another remarkable primate experience as you enter Kibale National Park in search of habituated chimpanzees. After the morning trek, you’ll visit Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, a community-supported conservation area known for birds and smaller primates.
Chimpanzee Trekking Briefing at Kanyanchu
Wake early and enjoy breakfast before traveling to the designated briefing point, commonly associated with Kanyanchu Visitor Centre.
Uganda Wildlife Authority personnel explain the regulations governing chimpanzee trekking, including safety precautions and responsible behavior around the animals.
After the briefing, follow your ranger guide into the forest. The trekking route depends on the location of the habituated chimpanzee community and current park arrangements.
Searching for Chimpanzees in Kibale Forest
Chimpanzee trekking in Kibale National Park is an exciting experience because chimpanzees are highly intelligent and active primates.
As you move through the forest, listen for chimpanzee calls and watch for movement in the surrounding vegetation. Chimpanzees may travel along the ground or move through the canopy in search of food.
Once located, observe the animals according to the current park regulations. You may witness feeding, grooming, vocalizations or interactions between members of the community.
Chimpanzees are wild animals, and sightings cannot be guaranteed. Their behavior and movements vary from day to day.
Other Primates and Forest Wildlife
Kibale also supports other primates, including red-tailed monkeys, blue monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys and grey-cheeked mangabeys.
Although chimpanzees are the main attraction, the forest offers opportunities to appreciate its wider biodiversity. Your guide may help identify birds, trees and other species encountered along the route.
After the trek, return to your lodge for lunch and relaxation.
Afternoon Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary Walk
Later in the afternoon, visit Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, a community-supported conservation area near Kibale National Park.
Accompanied by a local guide, explore the wetland trails and learn about the relationship between conservation, tourism and community livelihoods.
Bigodi is known for its birdlife and may provide opportunities to observe smaller primates. The surrounding vegetation and wetland environment create a different nature experience from the morning’s forest trek.
Responsible tourism at Bigodi supports community initiatives and helps demonstrate how conservation can create economic opportunities for local residents.
Return to your lodge for dinner and your final overnight stay of the safari.
Accommodation: Same selected lodge in the Kibale region.
Meal plan: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Day 12: Scenic Transfer From Kibale to Kampala or Entebbe and Departure
Enjoy your final breakfast at the lodge before checking out and beginning the return journey toward Kampala or Entebbe.
Today’s transfer takes you through western and central Uganda, passing agricultural landscapes, towns and countryside along the way.
Journey From Kibale Through Fort Portal
Depending on your lodge location and selected route, travel through the Fort Portal region before continuing east toward Kampala.
The journey offers views of tea plantations, farmland and rural communities. Your driver-guide may arrange short stops for refreshments or photographs when the schedule permits.
The road transfer generally requires most of the day, with the exact duration depending on traffic, road conditions and your final destination.
Arrival in Kampala or Entebbe
Continue toward Kampala or Entebbe according to your confirmed arrangements. Travelers staying in Uganda can be dropped at their selected hotel, while those departing internationally can be transferred to Entebbe International Airport.
Because the transfer from Kibale is long, a same-day international flight should only be booked when there is sufficient time for road travel, possible delays and airport check-in.
An additional overnight stay in Entebbe is recommended for travelers with early departures or those who prefer a more relaxed end to their safari.
End of Your Uganda Rwanda Safari Adventure
Your 12 Days Uganda Rwanda Safari Adventure concludes with unforgettable memories of mountain gorillas in two countries, chimpanzees in Kibale, wildlife encounters in Queen Elizabeth National Park and beautiful landscapes around Lake Kivu and Lake Bunyonyi.
From Rwanda’s volcanic mountains to Uganda’s ancient forests and savannah plains, this journey provides a remarkable introduction to East Africa’s wildlife and natural heritage.
Accommodation: End of safari, unless an additional overnight stay is arranged.
Meal plan: Breakfast, with lunch according to the confirmed transfer arrangements.
Accommodation During Your 12 Days Uganda Rwanda Safari Adventure
Accommodation is an important part of this cross-border safari. The itinerary includes eleven nights across Rwanda and Uganda, with lodges selected according to your preferred comfort level, budget and proximity to the scheduled activities.
Travelers can choose between luxury, mid-range and budget accommodation. The final lodge selection should be coordinated with gorilla permit locations, particularly in Bwindi, where different trekking sectors require different overnight arrangements.
Volcanoes National Park Accommodation
The first two nights are spent near Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. The original itinerary proposes Mountain Gorilla View Lodge or Volcanoes Lodge for luxury travelers, Le Bambou Gorilla Lodge or La Palme Hotel for mid-range guests, and Muhabura Hotel for budget travelers.
Staying near Kinigi or Musanze provides convenient access to the early morning gorilla trekking briefing. The final accommodation choice should consider room availability, meal arrangements and the driving distance to the designated meeting point.
Lake Kivu Accommodation
You’ll spend two nights beside Lake Kivu, with the original itinerary listing Lake Kivu Serena Hotel, Palm Garden Resort and Paradise Malahide.
These accommodation options provide different levels of comfort and access to the lake’s beautiful scenery. The final property should be selected according to your budget and preferred room category.
Lake Bunyonyi Accommodation
Lake Bunyonyi offers beautiful hillside accommodation overlooking the water and surrounding islands. The original itinerary includes Arcadia Cottages and Bunyonyi Overland accommodation.
The overnight stay provides an opportunity to relax before continuing toward Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
Bwindi Gorilla Safari Accommodation
Bwindi accommodation must be selected according to the trekking sector shown on your gorilla permit. The original itinerary focuses primarily on lodges in the Buhoma area.
Luxury options may include Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp and Mahogany Springs. Mid-range and budget accommodation can be selected from suitable operating properties near the assigned trekking sector.
Accommodation in Buhoma should not automatically be booked for travelers holding permits in Rushaga, Nkuringo or Ruhija, because the transfer distances between sectors can be substantial.
Queen Elizabeth National Park Accommodation
Two nights are spent in Queen Elizabeth National Park. The original itinerary includes Mweya Safari Lodge, Jacana Safari Lodge, Queen Elizabeth Bush Lodge and Simba Safari Lodge.
The selected lodge should provide convenient access to the planned Kasenyi game drive and Kazinga Channel boat safari. Current property operations and availability must be confirmed before booking.
Kibale National Park Accommodation
The final two nights are spent near Kibale National Park. Primate Lodge Kibale is a luxury option, while suitable mid-range and budget properties can be selected around the Kibale and Fort Portal region.
Accommodation should be chosen with the chimpanzee trekking briefing location in mind, as the activity normally begins early in the morning.
Gorilla Trekking and Chimpanzee Permits in Uganda and Rwanda
This itinerary includes two separate mountain gorilla trekking experiences and one chimpanzee trekking activity. Each requires its own official permit or reservation.
Rwanda Gorilla Trekking Permit
The standard international gorilla trekking permit for Volcanoes National Park costs USD 1,500 per person. Official discounts or alternative rates may apply to eligible visitor categories.
The permit allows participation in one standard guided trek, including approximately one hour of observation after the gorilla family has been located.
Uganda Gorilla Trekking Permit
The standard foreign non-resident gorilla trekking permit for Bwindi Impenetrable National Park costs USD 800 per person, subject to the official tariff applicable on your travel dates.
The Uganda permit is separate from the Rwanda permit. Travelers participating in both experiences require one valid permit for each country.
Total Gorilla Permit Cost for Two Treks
For a standard foreign non-resident traveler paying the published international rates, the combined cost of one Rwanda gorilla permit and one Uganda gorilla permit is USD 2,300 per person.
This amount covers the two standard gorilla permits only. It does not represent the complete safari cost or include other activities, accommodation and transportation.
Kibale Chimpanzee Trekking Permit
Chimpanzee trekking in Kibale National Park requires a separate Uganda Wildlife Authority reservation. The applicable fee should be confirmed using the official tariff for the intended travel dates and visitor category.
Standard chimpanzee trekking and chimpanzee habituation experiences are different activities with separate arrangements. This itinerary includes standard chimpanzee trekking.
Golden Monkey Tracking or Dian Fossey Hike
On Day 3, travelers may choose between golden monkey tracking and the Dian Fossey tomb hike in Volcanoes National Park.
Each activity has its own fee and arrangements. The quotation should specify which option is included and whether changing activities would affect the package price.
How Early Should Permits Be Booked?
Booking four to six months in advance is recommended during popular travel periods, particularly June through September and December through January.
Travelers with fixed dates or special accommodation preferences may benefit from reserving earlier. Gorilla permits should be confirmed before committing to non-refundable travel arrangements.
How Much Does a 12 Days Uganda Rwanda Safari Adventure Cost?
The total cost of a 12 Days Uganda Rwanda Safari Adventure depends on accommodation category, travel dates, number of travelers and the services included.
Because this itinerary includes two gorilla trekking permits, chimpanzee tracking, eleven nights of accommodation and private cross-border transportation, it is a substantial wildlife safari rather than a short gorilla trekking excursion.
Budget Uganda Rwanda Safari
A budget safari emphasizes practical accommodation and efficient transportation while retaining the main wildlife experiences.
Travelers may stay in guesthouses, community lodges and simpler safari properties, subject to availability. The gorilla trekking experience remains governed by the same park regulations regardless of accommodation category.
Mid-Range Uganda Rwanda Safari
A mid-range package combines comfortable accommodation, professional guiding and private safari transportation.
This category is suitable for couples, families with eligible trekking-age children and small groups seeking a balance between comfort and value.
Luxury Uganda Rwanda Safari
A luxury safari includes premium accommodation, carefully coordinated transfers and additional comfort throughout the journey.
Luxury lodges may offer attractive forest views, spacious rooms, personalized hospitality and additional services after trekking activities.
What Determines the Safari Price?
The largest expenses include gorilla permits, accommodation, transportation, park fees, chimpanzee trekking and the activities scheduled throughout the journey.
Traveling as a couple or small private group may reduce the per-person cost of shared vehicle and guiding services compared with traveling alone.
The final quotation should clearly identify the accommodation category, included meals, park activities, border arrangements and any optional excursions.
Request a Personalized Quotation
To receive an accurate safari price, provide your preferred travel dates, number of travelers, accommodation category and any special interests.
Visit Rwanda Gorilla can help coordinate the two gorilla permits, chimpanzee trekking, lodges and private transportation according to your confirmed itinerary.
Best Time for a 12 Days Uganda Rwanda Safari Adventure
Uganda and Rwanda can be visited throughout the year, although rainfall influences trekking conditions, road travel and wildlife viewing.
June to September
June through September is one of the most popular periods for gorilla trekking in both countries. Rainfall is often relatively low, making some forest trails easier to navigate.
These months are also attractive for game drives in Queen Elizabeth National Park, although wildlife sightings remain unpredictable.
December to February
December through February is another popular period for gorilla trekking and wildlife safaris. Conditions can be favorable for forest activities, although rain remains possible.
March to May
March through May generally brings heavier rainfall. Forest trails can become muddy and slippery, and some road transfers may take longer.
However, the landscapes are often exceptionally green, making this an attractive period for travelers who enjoy lush scenery and are comfortable with wet conditions.
October to November
October and November often experience additional rainfall. Gorilla trekking, chimpanzee tracking and game drives continue subject to park conditions and official safety decisions.
No season guarantees a particular gorilla trekking difficulty or specific wildlife sightings. Weather and animal movements vary throughout the year.
What to Pack for Your Uganda Rwanda Gorilla Safari
This itinerary combines mountain gorilla trekking, chimpanzee tracking, savannah game drives, boat excursions and cross-border travel. Packing should account for different environments and temperatures.
Clothing for Gorilla Trekking
Bring sturdy hiking boots, long trousers, long-sleeved shirts and a waterproof jacket. Gardening gloves can be useful when moving through thick vegetation or holding plants for support.
The mountain forests can be cool and wet, even when conditions in nearby towns are warm.
Clothing for Wildlife Game Drives
Lightweight, comfortable clothing is suitable for Queen Elizabeth National Park. A sun hat, sunscreen and sunglasses are useful during daytime activities.
Neutral-colored clothing is practical, but specialized safari clothing is not essential for every activity.
Camera and Photography Equipment
Bring a camera or smartphone with sufficient battery capacity and protection against moisture. Binoculars can improve wildlife viewing during game drives and boat excursions.
Flash photography is prohibited during gorilla trekking, so prepare your equipment for natural-light photography.
Personal Travel Essentials
Carry your passport, required visas, travel insurance documents, personal medication and appropriate charging equipment.
A comfortable daypack is useful for carrying drinking water, packed lunch and essential items during trekking activities.
Uganda Rwanda Safari Travel Information
Starting in Kigali and Ending in Entebbe

The itinerary includes an international border crossing between Rwanda and Uganda. Travelers must carry valid passports and appropriate entry authorization.
Border processing times can vary, so transfer schedules should allow sufficient flexibility.

Families traveling with younger children can still enjoy many other safari activities, but alternative arrangements will be needed while eligible adults participate in gorilla trekking.
