Rwanda is one of Africa’s most rewarding destinations for travelers seeking close wildlife encounters, beautiful scenery and meaningful cultural experiences. Known as the Land of a Thousand Hills, the country combines forested volcanic mountains, peaceful lakes, vibrant communities and an extraordinary commitment to wildlife conservation.

Our 6 Days Rwanda Safari Holiday introduces you to some of the country’s most celebrated attractions, beginning in Kigali before continuing to Volcanoes National Park and Lake Kivu. The itinerary combines mountain gorilla trekking, golden monkey tracking, cultural experiences, scenic excursions and visits to important historical attractions.

The highlight of this journey is the opportunity to encounter endangered mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park. Accompanied by authorized ranger guides and trackers, you’ll enter the mist-covered forests of the Virunga Mountains in search of a habituated gorilla family.

Once the gorillas have been located, visitors normally spend approximately one hour observing their natural behavior. Watching a powerful silverback, playful juveniles and mothers caring for their infants is an experience that many travelers remember for the rest of their lives.

Beyond gorilla trekking, this safari includes golden monkey tracking in the bamboo forests of Volcanoes National Park. These energetic primates are known for their distinctive golden-orange coloring and fascinating social behavior.

The journey also introduces you to Rwanda’s cultural heritage through a visit to the Gorilla Guardians community initiative, historically known as Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village. Here, visitors can learn about local traditions, community livelihoods and the relationship between tourism and conservation.

Another highlight is the opportunity to explore the Twin Lakes of Burera and Ruhondo, whose peaceful waters and surrounding hills create some of the most beautiful scenery in northern Rwanda.

You’ll also visit the area associated with Dian Fossey’s pioneering mountain gorilla research. Her conservation work helped bring international attention to the importance of protecting gorillas and their mountain habitat.

After exploring Volcanoes National Park, the safari continues to Lake Kivu, one of Africa’s Great Lakes. Here, you’ll enjoy a relaxing boat excursion and a proposed visit to Nyamirundi Island, associated with coffee-growing traditions and beautiful lakeside landscapes.

The journey concludes with a return to Kigali for sightseeing and departure. Throughout the six days, you’ll experience Rwanda’s natural beauty, cultural richness and warm hospitality.

This itinerary is suitable for couples, honeymooners, small private groups, wildlife enthusiasts and travelers seeking a comprehensive Rwanda holiday without visiting several distant national parks.

6 Days Rwanda Safari Holiday Tour Highlights

The most anticipated experience is mountain gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park. You’ll enter the forest with experienced ranger guides and enjoy a carefully managed encounter with a habituated mountain gorilla family.

Golden monkey tracking offers another exceptional primate experience. Unlike gorillas, golden monkeys are often highly active, moving rapidly through bamboo vegetation and creating exciting opportunities for observation and photography.

The cultural visit to Iby’Iwacu introduces you to local traditions, music, dance and community-based tourism initiatives. It also provides insight into how tourism can support communities living near protected wildlife areas.

The Twin Lakes of Burera and Ruhondo offer beautiful volcanic scenery and an opportunity to appreciate the peaceful landscapes surrounding Musanze.

A guided hike associated with Dian Fossey’s tomb and the former Karisoke research area introduces you to the history of mountain gorilla conservation.

Your 6 Days Rwanda Safari Holiday begins in Kigali, Rwanda’s capital city. Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you’ll be welcomed by your professional safari driver-guide

, who will assist with your luggage and introduce you to the journey ahead. Travelers already staying in Kigali can be collected directly from their hotel at an agreed time.

Before leaving the capital, your guide will provide a short briefing about the itinerary, including the activities planned in Volcanoes National Park and Lake Kivu. You’ll have an opportunity to ask questions about trekking, transportation, accommodation and the arrangements for the following days.

Depending on your arrival time, begin with a guided introduction to Kigali. The city is known for its attractive hillside setting, growing cultural scene and important historical landmarks. Its neighborhoods extend across green hills, offering beautiful views and a fascinating introduction to contemporary Rwanda.

Visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial

One of Kigali’s most significant attractions is the Kigali Genocide Memorial at Gisozi.

The memorial commemorates victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi and provides historical exhibitions that explain the events surrounding this tragedy. A visit offers an important opportunity to understand Rwanda’s history and the country’s journey toward reconstruction.

Visitors are encouraged to approach the memorial with respect and allow adequate time to explore the exhibitions. The experience can be emotionally demanding, but it provides meaningful context for understanding Rwanda beyond its wildlife attractions.

If your arrival schedule permits, you may also visit a local craft market or cultural center.

These stops introduce you to Rwandan craftsmanship, locally produced goods and everyday life in the capital. If you arrive late, the city tour can be shortened or reserved for Day 6.

Scenic Drive From Kigali to Volcanoes National Park

After sightseeing and lunch, depart Kigali and travel northwest toward Volcanoes National Park. The journey generally takes approximately two to three hours, depending on traffic, weather and the location of your lodge.

The drive is one of the most scenic routes in Rwanda. As you leave the capital, the road winds through cultivated hillsides, valleys and rural communities. Small farms cover the slopes, while local villages and roadside markets provide glimpses of daily life.

As you approach Musanze, the impressive Virunga Mountains gradually appear on the horizon.

Day 2: Mountain Gorilla Trekking and Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village

Today is the most anticipated day of your Rwanda safari. You’ll enter the forested slopes of Volcanoes National Park in search of endangered mountain gorillas, accompanied by authorized ranger guides and trackers. For many travelers, this is one of the most memorable wildlife experiences available anywhere in Africa.

Wake early and enjoy breakfast at your lodge. Collect your packed lunch and drinking water before traveling to Kinigi Park Headquarters for the scheduled morning briefing.

The cool mountain atmosphere and views of the surrounding volcanoes create a beautiful introduction to the day.

Gorilla Trekking Briefing at Kinigi

At the park headquarters, ranger guides explain the regulations governing gorilla trekking in Rwanda. Visitors learn how to behave around the gorillas, why health precautions are important and how to move safely through the forest.

Standard gorilla trekking groups normally contain a maximum of eight tourists. Each group is allocated a habituated gorilla family, with assignments managed by the park authorities according to the day’s circumstances.

Visitors with concerns about mobility or physical fitness should communicate these during the booking process and briefing. Park staff may consider such information, although the distance and difficulty of a particular trek cannot be guaranteed.

Walking Through the Virunga Forest

After the briefing, travel to the designated starting point and begin your forest walk.

Walking through the Virunga forest with your ranger guide

The route may pass through farmland before reaching the national park boundary, where cultivated landscapes give way to bamboo and dense mountain vegetation.

Gorilla trekking can be physically demanding because the terrain is sometimes steep, muddy and uneven. The duration depends on the location of the assigned gorilla family, which moves naturally through the forest in search of food.

Experienced trackers help locate the gorillas by monitoring their movements and communicating with ranger guides. Some groups reach the animals relatively quickly, while others spend several hours walking through challenging terrain.

Along the way, enjoy the beautiful forest environment. Mist may drift between the trees, birds call from the vegetation and the volcanic slopes create an unforgettable wilderness setting.

One Unforgettable Hour With Mountain Gorillas

When the gorilla family is located, your guide will explain how to approach safely. You’ll normally spend approximately one hour observing the animals while following the current park rules.

Sometimes the family is feeding quietly. On other occasions, juveniles may chase one another or climb through the vegetation. Every encounter is different because these are wild animals living in their natural habitat.

Visitors must remain calm, avoid sudden movements and maintain the required distance whenever possible. Flash photography is prohibited, and touching or feeding the gorillas is never permitted.

After the viewing period, begin the return walk through the forest. Depending on the length of the trek, you may enjoy your packed lunch during or after the activity before meeting your driver-guide.

Afternoon Visit to Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village

If the gorilla trek finishes early enough, continue to the Gorilla Guardians community initiative, historically known as

Community-based tourism can create employment and additional income for people living near the protected area. Supporting responsible cultural activities helps extend the benefits of tourism beyond the national park itself.

Because gorilla trekking duration is unpredictable, the cultural visit remains subject to your return time and energy levels. If the trek finishes late, the activity may need to be shortened or rescheduled.

Return to your lodge for dinner and relaxation after a rewarding day in the Virunga Mountains.

Accommodation options: Same selected lodge near Volcanoes National Park.

Meal plan: Breakfast, packed lunch and dinner.

Day 3: Golden Monkey Tracking and Visit to the Twin Lakes of Burera and Ruhondo

After yesterday’s mountain gorilla encounter, your safari continues with another remarkable primate experience. Today you’ll track golden monkeys in Volcanoes National Park before exploring the beautiful Twin Lakes of Burera and Ruhondo.

Golden monkeys are distinctive primates known for their golden-orange coloring, expressive faces and energetic movements. They inhabit the bamboo-rich forests of the Virunga Mountains and are among the most fascinating wildlife species visitors can encounter in Rwanda.

After the briefing, follow your ranger guide into the forest in search of a habituated golden monkey group. The walk often takes place through bamboo vegetation, although the precise route depends on the monkeys’ movements and current park arrangements.

Golden monkeys behave differently from mountain gorillas. They are often highly active, moving rapidly between bamboo stems

Remain attentive to your guide’s instructions and observe the animals responsibly. As with all wildlife encounters, the location and behavior of the monkeys cannot be guaranteed.

Discovering the Twin Lakes of Burera and Ruhondo

After golden monkey tracking, return to your lodge for lunch before continuing toward the Twin Lakes of Burera and Ruhondo. Located near Musanze, these beautiful lakes are surrounded by hills, farmland and dramatic volcanic scenery.

Lake Burera and Lake Ruhondo are among northern Rwanda’s most attractive natural landscapes. Their peaceful waters and surrounding communities provide a contrast to the dense forests explored during the morning.

The excursion offers opportunities for sightseeing, photography and learning about rural life around the lakes. Depending on the selected route, you may stop at viewpoints overlooking the water

and surrounding hills.

On clear days, the volcanic mountains provide a spectacular backdrop. The combination of green slopes, cultivated fields and reflective lake surfaces makes this area particularly appealing to photographers.

Optional Boat Experience and Local Community Visits

Depending on time, weather and local availability, a guided boat excursion may be arranged on one of the lakes.

Such activities should be confirmed in advance and undertaken with an experienced local operator using appropriate safety equipment.

Visitors interested in cultural experiences may also explore nearby communities or learn about local farming and fishing traditions, where suitable visits are available.

The Twin Lakes excursion is intended to be relaxing after the morning’s forest walk. Rather than rushing between attractions, take time to appreciate the scenery and the peaceful atmosphere of northern Rwanda.

Return to your lodge in the late afternoon or early evening. Enjoy dinner and prepare for tomorrow’s Dian Fossey hike and transfer to Lake Kivu.

Accommodation options: Same selected lodge near Volcanoes National Park.

Meal plan: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Day 4: Dian Fossey Tomb Hike and Transfer to Lake Kivu

Today combines Rwanda’s remarkable gorilla conservation history with a scenic journey to Lake Kivu. After an early breakfast, prepare for a guided hike associated with the work of Dian Fossey, the pioneering primatologist whose research helped transform international understanding of mountain gorillas.

Fossey spent many years studying mountain gorillas in the Virunga Mountains and established the Karisoke Research Center in 1967. Her dedication to research and conservation helped draw global attention to the threats facing these remarkable animals.

The hike to the historical research area and Fossey’s grave is an important experience for travelers interested in wildlife conservation. It provides an opportunity to explore the mountain environment where she carried out much of her work.

Return From the Hike and Lunch

After completing the hike, return to your starting point and meet your safari driver-guide. The total duration depends on trail conditions, walking pace and the arrangements for the day.

Enjoy lunch and take time to rest before beginning the journey toward Lake Kivu. Because the Dian Fossey hike can occupy a substantial portion of the day, the afternoon transfer should remain flexible.

Lake Kivu is surrounded by green hills, lakeside communities and attractive bays. Its scenery makes it a popular destination for travelers seeking a quieter experience after gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park.

The day centers on a guided boat excursion, with a proposed visit to Nyamirundi Island, also associated with coffee-growing traditions. The exact route, landing arrangements and island activities must be confirmed with a local operator before departure.

Depending on the chosen route, you may pass fishing communities, small islands and stretches of shoreline where daily life continues beside the water.

The experience is primarily scenic and cultural rather than a traditional wildlife safari. Its appeal lies in the lake’s peaceful environment, surrounding landscapes and opportunities to learn about local livelihoods.

Visiting Nyamirundi Island

The original safari itinerary includes a visit to Nyamirundi Island for an introduction to coffee production.

This should be arranged with a local operator who can confirm the island’s current visitor access and the availability of a suitable coffee experience.

Rwanda is internationally recognized for producing high-quality Arabica coffee. Coffee cultivation plays an important role in the country’s agricultural economy, and suitable farm or cooperative visits can introduce travelers to the processes involved in growing and preparing coffee.

Where an organized coffee experience is available, visitors may learn about cultivation, harvesting, processing

The original tour offers luxury, mid-range and basic accommodation choices, allowing travelers to select a package that suits their preferred comfort level and budget.

Luxury Accommodation Near Volcanoes National Park

Luxury accommodation is particularly suitable for honeymooners, couples celebrating special occasions and travelers seeking additional comfort after physically demanding trekking activities.

Mid-Range Accommodation Near Volcanoes National Park

Le Bambou Gorilla Lodge and La Palme Hotel are the mid-range options specified in the original safari. These properties provide alternatives for travelers who want comfortable accommodation while managing their overall safari budget.

When selecting a property, consider the travel time to Kinigi Park Headquarters, meal arrangements and the comfort of the rooms.

Basic Accommodation Near Volcanoes National Park

Muhabura Hotel is the basic-category option listed in the original itinerary. It may suit travelers who prefer practical accommodation and want to prioritize spending on gorilla trekking and other activities.

Regardless of accommodation category, the standard gorilla trekking regulations and viewing duration remain the same.

Lake Kivu Accommodation

For the two nights beside Lake Kivu, the original itinerary lists Lake Kivu Serena Hotel as the luxury option, Palm Garden Resort as the deluxe alternative and Paradise Malahide as the budget choice.

These properties provide different styles of accommodation around the lake. The final selection should be based on your travel dates, preferred room category, available facilities and confirmed rates.

All accommodation is subject to availability at the time of reservation. If a preferred lodge is fully booked, a comparable alternative can be proposed for approval.

Rwanda Gorilla Trekking Permits and Activity Fees

A valid gorilla trekking permit is mandatory for visitors who want to track mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park. Permit availability should be confirmed before finalizing the safari dates.

How Much Is a Rwanda Gorilla Trekking Permit?

The standard Rwanda gorilla trekking permit costs USD 1,500 per international visitor. Official alternative rates and promotions may apply to certain eligible categories of travelers.

The permit allows participation in one standard guided gorilla trek. After the assigned gorilla family has been located, visitors normally spend approximately one hour observing the animals.

Gorilla trekking groups generally include a maximum of eight tourists per habituated family. The minimum age for standard gorilla trekking in Rwanda is 15 years.

Golden Monkey Tracking Permit

Golden monkey tracking requires a separate activity reservation. The applicable fee should be checked against the current official Rwanda Development Board tariff before confirming the package.

The activity usually takes place in the morning and involves guided walking through the bamboo forests of Volcanoes National Park.

Dian Fossey Tomb Hike Permit

The Dian Fossey tomb hike is another separately managed park activity. Its fee, departure arrangements and any additional requirements should be confirmed before travel.

Because the hike can be physically demanding, visitors should also consider their fitness and the weather conditions before participating.

When Should You Book?

Booking gorilla permits four to six months in advance is recommended during popular travel periods, especially June through September and the December holiday season.

Travelers with fixed dates or limited flexibility may benefit from booking earlier. Permits and other activities should be confirmed before making non-refundable travel arrangements.

How Much Does a 6 Days Rwanda Safari Holiday Cost?

The total cost of a 6 Days Rwanda Safari Holiday depends on the accommodation category, travel dates, number of travelers and activities included.

The Rwanda gorilla trekking permit is one of the largest fixed expenses. The complete package must also account for five nights of accommodation, private transportation, guiding, meals and the other planned activities.

Basic Rwanda Safari Package

A basic package focuses on practical accommodation and efficient travel arrangements. This option is suitable for travelers who want to experience gorilla trekking while keeping additional accommodation costs relatively low.

The original itinerary lists Muhabura Hotel near Volcanoes National Park and Paradise Malahide at Lake Kivu as the basic-category options.

Mid-Range Rwanda Safari Package

A mid-range package combines comfortable accommodation with private safari transportation and professional guiding. This category is popular with couples and small groups seeking a balance between comfort and value.

The original itinerary includes Le Bambou Gorilla Lodge or La Palme Hotel near Volcanoes National Park, with Palm Garden Resort as a Lake Kivu option.

Luxury Rwanda Safari Package

A luxury package emphasizes higher-end accommodation, personalized hospitality and additional comfort throughout the journey.

The original itinerary lists Mountain Gorilla View Lodge or Volcanoes Lodge near Volcanoes National Park and Lake Kivu Serena Hotel for the lakeside stay.

Request a Personalized Safari Quotation

For an accurate price, provide your preferred travel dates, number of travelers and accommodation category. Your quotation should clearly specify the gorilla permit, golden monkey tracking, Dian Fossey hike, boat excursion and cultural activities.

Optional experiences, porter services and personal expenses should be identified separately so that you understand the complete cost before booking.

Best Time for a 6 Days Rwanda Safari Holiday

Rwanda can be visited throughout the year, although weather conditions affect the comfort of forest trekking and outdoor activities.

June to September

June through September is one of the most popular periods for gorilla trekking. Rainfall is often relatively low, and some forest trails may be easier to navigate.

Because demand is high, early permit and accommodation reservations are recommended.

December to February

December through February is another popular travel period. Conditions can be favorable for gorilla trekking, golden monkey tracking and sightseeing around Lake Kivu.

Rain remains possible because Volcanoes National Park is a mountain environment.

March to May

March through May generally brings heavier rainfall. Forest trails can become muddy and slippery, making trekking more demanding.

However, the landscapes are often exceptionally green, and visitors who are comfortable with wet conditions may still enjoy the experience.

October to November

October and November often experience additional rainfall. Gorilla trekking and other activities continue subject to official park decisions and safety conditions.

There is no season that guarantees easier gorilla trekking or particular wildlife behavior. Mountain gorillas move freely, and every encounter is different.

What to Pack for Your Rwanda Gorilla Safari

This six-day itinerary combines mountain trekking, cultural experiences, scenic drives and lakeside activities. Packing should account for changing weather conditions and different levels of physical activity.

Hiking Boots and Trekking Clothing

Bring sturdy hiking boots with good traction and ankle support. Long trousers and long-sleeved shirts help protect against vegetation, insects and scratches during forest walks.

Gardening gloves are useful when holding vegetation for support, while a waterproof jacket is essential because rain can occur unexpectedly in the mountains.

Daypack and Personal Essentials

A comfortable daypack is useful for carrying drinking water, packed lunch, personal medication and camera equipment during trekking activities.

Bring insect repellent, sunscreen, a sun hat and any medication you may need during the safari.

Camera Equipment

A camera or smartphone can help capture memorable wildlife encounters and scenic landscapes. Protect electronic equipment against moisture and carry spare batteries where appropriate.

Flash photography is prohibited during gorilla trekking, so prepare to photograph the animals using natural light.

Clothing for Lake Kivu

Pack comfortable casual clothing and suitable footwear for relaxing beside Lake Kivu. Swimwear may be useful if your accommodation has a swimming pool or if an approved swimming activity is arranged.

For boat excursions, follow the operator’s safety instructions and wear the provided life jacket.
