Nshongi Gorilla Family

A well-known Bwindi family, often trekked from the southern sectors — useful briefing context for Uganda gorilla itineraries.

The Nshongi Family

Nshongi is one of Bwindi’s better-known habituated gorilla families, historically associated with the southern sectors (Rushaga / Nkuringo side). Like all Bwindi groups, ranging changes with feeding, silverback dynamics, and splits or mergers over time.

We treat family profiles as planning notes, not a guarantee of which group you will be assigned. Rangers allocate trekkers at the briefing based on fitness, group size, and where each family spent the night. Confirm current habituation status when you book.

Physical Characteristics

Members share the mountain gorilla’s build: silverbacks with a grey saddle, blackbacks, adult females, and infants. Family composition is recorded at each habituation check and can change after splits — ask for the latest briefing notes before travel.

Behaviour and Social Structure

Nshongi has a record as a sizeable, well-habituated group, which historically made it a favourite for photography and first-time trekkers assigned to the south. Behaviour on the day still depends on feeding, weather, and the silverback’s tolerance.

Diet and Habitat

Like other Bwindi families, Nshongi feeds on leaves, stems, shoots, and fruit as the forest offers them. Trackers follow nest sites from the previous night rather than a fixed trail.

Conservation Status

Every habituated Bwindi family is part of the same fragile mountain gorilla population. Permits, veterinary teams, and community revenue around Rushaga and Nkuringo are what keep this forest economically worth protecting.
