About

Three volcanoes, one compact park

Mgahinga is Uganda’s corner of the Virunga massif — Muhabura, Gahinga, and Sabinyo rising above Kisoro. Gorilla families move across the Rwanda–Uganda–DRC lines, so trekking here depends on where the habituated group is that month.

Even without a gorilla permit, golden monkeys and the volcano day hikes make Mgahinga a strong add-on to a southern Bwindi itinerary. The park is small; the skyline is not.

Frequently asked questions

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park FAQs

Are gorilla permits always available?

No. The habituated group crosses international boundaries. We confirm Uganda-side availability before we lock the lodge.

Is Mgahinga a substitute for Bwindi?

Not for guaranteed gorilla trekking. It is a superb golden-monkey and volcano add-on, and a gorilla option when the family is in-country.

How hard are the volcano hikes?

Sabinyo is a long, steep day with scrambles. Muhabura is higher. Gahinga is the kinder peak. We match the hike to fitness.

Can we visit from Rwanda?

The Cyanika border is close. We can build a Volcanoes–Mgahinga crossing when papers and timing allow.

Do we stay in the park?

Most guests stay in Kisoro or at lodges near the gate. In-park options are limited.
