Lake Kivu is where Rwanda itineraries breathe. After Volcanoes, the road west drops to a long freshwater sea shared with the DRC — beaches, fishing villages, and hotels that face the water instead of the forest.
Rubavu (Gisenyi) is the easiest add-on after Kinigi. Karongi sits mid-lake. Rusizi pairs with Nyungwe. We use Kivu as a hinge, not a week-long resort stay, unless you ask for it.

Is Lake Kivu safe to swim?
Hotels advise on local conditions. We treat it as a scenic lake stop, not a tropical beach holiday.
Rubavu, Karongi, or Rusizi?
Rubavu after Volcanoes. Rusizi if Nyungwe is next. Karongi if you want a quieter mid-lake night and have the extra drive.
Do we need more than one night?
One night is enough as a transit rest. Two nights if you want a boat outing and a full day off the road.
Can we see the DRC from here?
Goma sits across the water from Rubavu. We do not cross unless the itinerary is a planned Virunga trip with the right papers.
Is Kivu worth it without Nyungwe?
Yes as a rest after gorillas. Skip it if you would rather spend the night in Kigali or add Akagera.
