The Kidepo Lonyili Summit Hike takes you through one of Uganda’s most remote and rugged landscapes. Located in the dramatic Karamoja region, this trail winds through the Lonyili Mountains, offering striking views, pristine vegetation, and a deep connection to Karamojong culture.

The Lonyili Mountains rise on the southeastern edge of Kidepo Valley National Park, bordering South Sudan. Though lesser-known than Uganda’s Rwenzori or Elgon ranges, Lonyili offers a wild, unspoiled hiking experience. The summit provides expansive views of Kidepo Valley, South Sudan’s plains, and parts of Mount Morungole.
The trail climbs steadily through savanna grassland, thorny bush, and rocky outcrops. Birds call from fig trees, and agile klipspringers bound between boulders. As you climb, cooler air and changing vegetation welcome you to higher elevations.
The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) manages all hikes within Kidepo Valley National Park. You must pay a nature walk fee, and the hike must be guided:
| Category | Fee (USD) |
| Foreign Non-Resident | $50 |
| Foreign Resident | $40 |
| East African Citizen (EAC) | UGX 50,000 |
These fees include a professional ranger guide. Porters can be arranged locally.
Though wildlife is more concentrated in the valley, hikers sometimes spot large mammals on the lower slopes or from the summit ridges.
The dry seasons—December to February and June to August—offer the safest conditions. During the rainy months, trails become slippery, and visibility decreases.
Because the region gets hot quickly, start the hike early—usually by 7:00 AM.
The best access is via Apoka inside Kidepo Valley National Park. Flights from Entebbe to Kidepo Airstrip run several times a week. Overland travel from Kampala takes 10–12 hours, best done in a 4×4.
The Kidepo Lonyili Summit Hike is a hidden gem for adventurous travelers. Few places offer such solitude, wildlife, and panoramic beauty in a single day. Combine the hike with game drives and cultural visits for a complete Karamoja experience.
