Where is Lonyili Summit?
The Lonyili Mountains rise on the southeastern edge of Kidepo Valley National Park, bordering South Sudan. Though lesser-known than Uganda’s Rwenzori or Elgon ranges, Lonyili offers a wild, unspoiled hiking experience. The summit provides expansive views of Kidepo Valley, South Sudan’s plains, and parts of Mount Morungole.

The trail climbs steadily through savanna grassland, thorny bush, and rocky outcrops. Birds call from fig trees, and agile klipspringers bound between boulders. As you climb, cooler air and changing vegetation welcome you to higher elevations.
Required Permits and Fees
The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) manages all hikes within Kidepo Valley National Park. You must pay a nature walk fee, and the hike must be guided:

Best Time to Hike
The dry seasons—December to February and June to August—offer the safest conditions. During the rainy months, trails become slippery, and visibility decreases.

- Sunhat, sunscreen, and insect repellent
- At least 3 liters of water
- Packed lunch or snacks
- Camera or binoculars
- Walking stick (optional but helpful for steep parts)
Because the region gets hot quickly, start the hike early—usually by 7:00 AM.
Getting There
The best access is via Apoka inside Kidepo Valley National Park. Flights from Entebbe to Kidepo Airstrip run several times a week. Overland travel from Kampala takes 10–12 hours, best done in a 4×4.
