A true canopy view
Stand among the crowns of one of Africa’s oldest montane rainforests.
Step onto a suspension bridge through the Nyungwe rainforest canopy — a short, memorable walk above one of East Africa’s oldest montane forests.
About this activity
Nyungwe’s canopy walkway is a suspension bridge strung through the upper forest, reached on a guided trail from the Uwinka area. It is one of the simplest ways to feel the scale of this rainforest — layers of green, bird calls, and occasionally colobus moving through the trees.
The outing is short compared with chimpanzee tracking and suits most reasonably mobile travellers who are comfortable with heights. Many guests do chimpanzees one morning and the canopy the next, staying in a tea-estate or forest lodge.
Slots are timed. We book your walk with park staff so it does not clash with a chimp briefing.
Stand among the crowns of one of Africa’s oldest montane rainforests.
Turacos, hornbills, and sunbirds use the same layer as the bridge.
The walkway over green hills is the image most guests take home.
Plenty of time left for a waterfall walk, tea estate, or lodge rest.
Meet your ranger at the canopy reception, collect tickets, and hear the safety briefing.
Walk a maintained path through the understory to the bridge towers.
Take your time on the suspension bridge; pause for views and photographs.
Loop back to the start and continue to your lodge or a second short trail.
Frequently asked questions
It sways a little and sits high above the slope. Most visitors handle it fine if they take it slowly. If you have severe vertigo, skip the bridge and enjoy a ground trail instead.
Sometimes, if the chimp track is short. We prefer separate mornings so you are not rushed.
Budget roughly USD 60–70 for the activity and park fees. We include the current rate in your quote.
Closed shoes, a light rain layer, and clothes you can walk in for an hour. The bridge can be cool and damp.
Older children who can walk steadily and follow ranger instructions are usually welcome. We confirm the park’s minimum age when we book.
Unlikely. Chimpanzee tracking is a separate permit. From the canopy you are more likely to see birds, squirrels, and sometimes colobus.

We combine the walkway with chimpanzee tracking, tea-estate lodges, and the drive from Kigali or Lake Kivu.
