This 3-day safari in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda combines the world-renowned gorilla trekking experience with a visit to the Dian Fossey Tomb. Rwanda Gorilla Trekking Safari

Day 1: Arrival – Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, your driver/guide will pick you up and drive north to Volcanoes National Park, passing through scenic Rwandan hills, terraced tea plantations, and traditional villages.

Check into your lodge and relax after the drive. Depending on your arrival time, you may take a short walk around the lodge or enjoy views of the Virunga volcanoes. In the evening, your guide will brief you on the next day’s gorilla trekking and park regulations.

Accommodation:

  • Luxury: Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge / Virunga Lodge
  • Mid-range: Mountain Gorilla View Lodge / Le Bambou Gorilla Lodge
  • Budget: Kinigi Guest House / Volcanoes Guest House

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

Wake up early for breakfast and transfer to the park headquarters for a briefing. Rangers will explain the rules, safety protocols, and behavior around mountain gorillas.

Trek through the dense rainforest and bamboo zones in search of your allocated gorilla family. The trek may take 1–6 hours depending on the gorilla group’s location. Spend one hour observing the gorillas, photographing their interactions, and appreciating their intelligence and social behavior.

Return to your lodge in the afternoon for lunch and relaxation. Optional evening nature walks near the lodge provide a chance to spot other primates, birds, and forest flora.

Day 3: Dian Fossey Tomb Hike – Return to Kigali

After breakfast, embark on a hike to the Dian Fossey Tomb, located within the park. The hike takes you through stunning volcanic slopes and bamboo forests, with scenic views of the surrounding Virunga mountains. Along the trail, learn about Dian Fossey’s life, conservation work, and her enduring legacy protecting mountain gorillas.

After the hike, return to your lodge for lunch, then drive back to Kigali, stopping along the way for photos or a brief cultural encounter in local villages. Arrive in the late afternoon or evening, concluding your 3-day Rwanda gorilla safari.
