3 Days Chimpanzee Trekking in Rwanda – Volcanoes & Nyungwe Forest

Day 1: Arrival – Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park
Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, your guide will meet you and brief you on your chimpanzee trekking adventure. You will then drive to Nyungwe Forest National Park (approx. 5–6 hours), passing scenic Rwandan countryside, tea plantations, and rolling hills. Short stops may be made for refreshments, photos, or to buy local fruits.
Check in at your lodge and relax. Depending on your arrival time, you can enjoy a short evening nature walk around the lodge or relax with dinner and a briefing for the next day’s chimpanzee trek.

Day 2: Chimpanzee Trekking in Nyungwe Forest
Wake up early for breakfast and transfer to the chimpanzee trekking trailhead. Before you start, attend a briefing by experienced rangers about forest safety, chimpanzee behavior, and trekking etiquette.
Trek through Nyungwe’s dense rainforest in search of the chimpanzees. Expect the hike to take 2–5 hours depending on the location of the primates. Along the way, enjoy spotting other primates such as red colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and baboons. Birdwatchers will delight in the colorful species that inhabit the forest canopy.
After your chimpanzee encounter, return to the lodge for lunch and relaxation. Optional activities include a canopy walk, which gives breathtaking views of the forest from 70 meters above the ground, or a short forest trail hike to discover orchids, butterflies, and rare plants.

Day 3: Nyungwe Forest – Return to Kigali – Departure
After breakfast, enjoy a relaxed morning with optional nature walks or birdwatching. Begin your drive back to Kigali, taking in the scenic views along the way. Arrive in Kigali in time for lunch or your departure flight.
