The History Behind Saanane
The park is named after Mzee Saanane Chawandi, a pioneering conservationist who originally used the island as a zoo in the 1960s. His mission was to promote wildlife conservation awareness through education and recreation.
In 2013, the area officially became Saanane Island National Park, under the management of TANAPA (Tanzania National Parks Authority).

It’s open daily from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Park entry is affordable, with lower rates for residents and East African citizens.
