Bwindi Gorilla Trekking Facts. Uganda’s most iconic gorilla trekking destination is Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. This UNESCO World Heritage Site harbors nearly half the world’s mountain gorillas and offers a range of trekking trails through misty, ancient rainforest. Below are the key facts you need to know before setting off on your unforgettable gorilla trekking experience.

Bwindi boasts more than 20 habituated gorilla families across four trekking sectors. Each group consists of several individuals led by a dominant silverback. Some groups are known for twins, playful juveniles, or large family sizes.
Bwindi offers treks in four distinct regions:
Choosing your sector affects accommodation, group allocation, and terrain difficulty.
Treks may last 30 minutes to 7 hours, depending on the gorillas’ movements. Once you find the group, you’ll spend one hour observing them at close range.
Bwindi offers the Gorilla Habituation Experience in Rushaga. This four-hour encounter allows you to join researchers as they slowly accustom a wild gorilla family to human presence. Only four visitors join per day.
Only 8 visitors may trek each gorilla group daily. Bwindi issues over 160 permits per day across its sectors, but demand stays high. Booking early is essential.
A standard gorilla permit in Bwindi costs $800 per person (as of 2025). The Gorilla Habituation permit costs $1,500. All fees include a ranger guide, park entry, and one hour (or four hours) with the gorillas.
Trek during Uganda’s dry seasons: December–February and June–September. Trails stay drier, and visibility improves. However, gorillas can be tracked year-round.
Bwindi’s elevation ranges from 1,160 to 2,607 meters. Trekking requires moderate fitness, as terrain is steep, muddy, and densely forested. Porters are available to carry bags and assist on difficult slopes.
Bwindi protects more than just gorillas. The forest shelters elephants, chimpanzees, duikers, and over 350 bird species. It’s also home to butterflies, medicinal plants, and primates like L’Hoest’s monkeys.
Many travelers reach Bwindi in a 4×4 Land Cruiser, ideal for handling Uganda’s rugged roads. Alternatively, you can fly to Kihihi or Kisoro airstrips, followed by a short drive to your lodge.
Bwindi offers more than gorilla trekking. It invites you to step into ancient rainforest, connect with endangered giants, and discover a thriving ecosystem. Whether you choose a standard trek or a full-day habituation, the experience transforms you.
