Bwindi offers the Gorilla Habituation Experience in Rushaga. This four-hour encounter allows you to join researchers as they slowly accustom a wild gorilla family to human presence. Only four visitors join per day.

  1. Gorilla Permits Are Limited

Only 8 visitors may trek each gorilla group daily. Bwindi issues over 160 permits per day across its sectors, but demand stays high. Booking early is essential.

  1. Permit Cost

A standard gorilla permit in Bwindi costs $800 per person (as of 2025). The Gorilla Habituation permit costs $1,500. All fees include a ranger guide, park entry, and one hour (or four hours) with the gorillas.

  1. Best Time to Trek

Trek during Uganda’s dry seasons: December–February and June–September. Trails stay drier, and visibility improves. However, gorillas can be tracked year-round.

  1. Altitude and Fitness

Bwindi’s elevation ranges from 1,160 to 2,607 meters. Trekking requires moderate fitness, as terrain is steep, muddy, and densely forested. Porters are available to carry bags and assist on difficult slopes.
