Gorilla Trekking from Kampala

Gorilla Trekking from Kampala, Uganda: Your Ultimate Primate Adventure

Gorilla trekking in Uganda is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and starting your journey from Kampala makes it accessible and convenient. Uganda is home to the endangered mountain gorillas, primarily in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. This safari combines scenic drives, cultural encounters, and close encounters with these magnificent primates.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Departure from Kampala to Bwindi or Mgahinga

Your journey begins with a scenic drive from Kampala through Uganda’s lush countryside, rolling hills, and local villages. Stop en route for lunch and photos, then continue toward your lodge near Bwindi or Mgahinga. Arrive in time to relax and prepare for the next day’s trek.

  • Meal Plan: Lunch & Dinner
  • Accommodation Options:
    • Budget: Buhoma Community Rest Camp / Mgahinga Gorilla View Lodge
    • Mid-range: Rushaga Gorilla Camp / Gorilla Forest Camp
    • Luxury: Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge / Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking Adventure

After an early breakfast, head to the park headquarters for a briefing. Accompanied by experienced rangers and trackers, you’ll hike through dense forest to locate a gorilla family. Trekking can last 2–6 hours, depending on the gorillas’ location and terrain.

Once found, you’ll spend one hour observing them in their natural habitat. Witness mothers with infants, playful juveniles, and the dominant silverback in a powerful display of strength and family bonds. After the trek, return to your lodge for dinner and relaxation.

  • Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
  • Accommodation: Same lodge as Day 1

Day 3: Cultural Visit and Return to Kampala

After breakfast, consider a cultural visit to local communities such as the Batwa Pygmy villages near Bwindi. Learn about their traditions, crafts, and daily life before beginning your scenic return drive to Kampala. Arrive in the evening and conclude your safari.

  • Meal Plan: Breakfast & Lunch

Best Time to Trek Gorillas

  • June–September and December–February (dry seasons) are ideal for trekking. Trails are easier to navigate, and gorilla sightings are more predictable.
  • March–May and October–November (wet seasons) offer lush scenery and fewer tourists, but trails are muddier and more challenging.
