Simien Mountains National Park

Simien Mountains National Park—Ethiopia’s Roof of Africa

Simien Mountains National Park is a treasure in northern Ethiopia. With jagged peaks, deep valleys, and high plateaus, it offers some of the most dramatic landscapes in Africa. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to rare wildlife, ancient culture, and hiking trails that challenge even seasoned trekkers.

If you are seeking raw nature and adventure, the Simien Mountains are the perfect destination.

Where Is Simien Mountains National Park?

The park lies in the Amhara region of northern Ethiopia, about 100 km north of Gondar. It stretches across the Simien Mountains, including Ras Dashen, Ethiopia’s highest peak at 4,550 meters.

Why Visit Simien Mountains National Park?

This park is a haven for hikers, nature lovers, and photographers. It offers:

  • Breathtaking mountain scenery
  • Unique wildlife sightings
  • Cultural encounters with local communities

You walk along cliffs that drop 1,000 meters. Camp under stars at high altitudes. You spot species found nowhere else on Earth.

Wildlife in Simien Mountains

The Simien Mountains shelter several endemic species, including:

  1. Gelada Baboons

These grass-eating primates live in large groups. Their red chest patch gives them the nickname “bleeding heart baboons.”

  1. Walia Ibex

A rare mountain goat that climbs steep rock faces. Found only in Ethiopia.

  1. Ethiopian Wolf

The rarest canid in the world. It resembles a fox but hunts like a wolf.

Birdwatchers also enjoy spotting bearded vultures, lammergeiers, and over 130 bird species.

Best Time to Visit

The dry season runs from October to April. This is the best time for trekking and wildlife viewing.

Avoid the rainy season (June–September), when trails become slippery and clouds obscure views.

Things to Do in the Simien Mountains

  1. Trekking

This is the park’s main activity. Treks range from 2 to 10 days. The most popular route leads to Ras Dashen. You’ll pass mountain passes, giant lobelia plants, and isolated villages.

  1. Wildlife Watching

Spot geladas near Sankaber and Walia ibex around Chenek Camp. Early morning is the best time.

  1. Cultural Tours

Meet the Amhara people living around the park. You’ll learn about their way of life and how they farm and herd at high altitudes.

How to Get There

By Air:

Fly to Gondar from Addis Ababa. Ethiopian Airlines operates daily flights.

By Road:

From Gondar, drive to Debark, the park’s gateway town. The distance is about 100 km, which takes around 3 hours.

From Debark, you’ll enter the park with a guide, scout, and sometimes a mule handler.

Entry Requirements

  • All visitors must register at the Simien Mountains National Park Office in Debark
  • A certified guide and scout are mandatory for any trek
  • Entry fees vary by activity and duration but average $50–$70 per person

Camping and equipment rentals are available in Debark. Local tour operators also offer packages with tents, meals, and porters.

Accommodation Options

You can choose between:

  • Camping: Basic campsites like Sankaber, Gich, and Chenek are popular. Bring your own gear or hire locally.
  • Lodges: Simien Lodge near Buyit Ras is the most luxurious option. It sits at over 3,200 meters and has spectacular views.
  • Guesthouses: Debark offers affordable options for pre- or post-trek stays.

Trekking Tips

  • Acclimatize: Spend a day at higher altitude before starting
  • Dress in layers: Days are warm, but nights get freezing
  • Carry water: Clean water sources are limited
  • Use walking sticks: Trails can be steep and rocky
  • Travel with a local operator: They handle logistics, food, and safety
