Everything You Need to Know Before Visiting Devil’s Pool, Victoria Falls

Everything You Need to Know Before Visiting Devil’s Pool, Victoria Falls

Perched at the edge of the mighty Victoria Falls, Devil’s Pool is one of Africa’s most thrilling natural infinity pools. This unique adventure lets you swim right up to the lip of the world’s largest waterfall—with a 100-meter drop just inches away. If you love adrenaline, jaw-dropping views, and unforgettable experiences, Devil’s Pool deserves a top spot on your travel bucket list.

But before you dive in, there are a few important things you need to know.

What Is Devil’s Pool?

Devil’s Pool is a naturally formed rock pool on Livingstone Island, located on the Zambian side of Victoria Falls. During the dry season, the water level drops low enough to allow safe swimming at the very edge of the falls. Protected by a rock barrier, the pool lets brave visitors enjoy the surreal experience of lying right at the edge while the Zambezi River crashes over beside them.

When Is the Best Time to Visit?

You can only visit Devil’s Pool during the dry season, when the water flow is low and safe for swimming.

Best time to go:

Mid-August to early January

Peak access is usually from late September to December, but this can vary slightly depending on rainfall.

Avoid visiting during high-water months (March to June), when Devil’s Pool is closed for safety.

How to Get There

Devil’s Pool is only accessible through guided tours operated from Livingstone Island. You’ll start your journey from either Livingstone, Zambia, or Victoria Falls town, Zimbabwe.

  • From Livingstone: 10-minute boat ride to Livingstone Island
  • From Zimbabwe: Cross the border into Zambia (visa required), then transfer to the launch point

Tours depart 5 times a day and include boat transfers, island access, swimming, and meals.

Is It Safe?

Yes—when visited with licensed guides, Devil’s Pool is considered safe. Guides accompany you every step, from the boat ride to the edge of the pool. They assess water levels daily and only operate when conditions are ideal.

You must be a strong swimmer and able to walk over slippery rocks. The current is not strong in the pool itself, but extra caution is always essential.

What to Expect on the Tour

Your Devil’s Pool experience typically includes:

  • A speedboat ride across the Zambezi
  • A short walk on slippery rocks to reach the pool
  • A supervised swim to the edge of Victoria Falls
  • Time to pose for epic photos with the plunge behind you
  • Breakfast, lunch, or high tea on Livingstone Island (depending on the time of your tour)

The whole experience lasts about 1.5 to 2 hours.

What to Pack

Bring only the essentials. Most operators provide towels, drinks, and meals, but you should carry:

  • Swimsuit (wear it under your clothes)
  • Quick-dry clothing
  • Water shoes or sandals with grip
  • Waterproof camera or GoPro
  • Sunscreen and hat
  • Passport (if crossing the border from Zimbabwe)

Avoid carrying valuables or heavy gear, as you may get wet on the boat ride.

Who Can Visit?

Devil’s Pool is suitable for:

  • Adults and older teens (some tours allow children aged 12+)
  • Fit and confident swimmers
  • Travelers with no major mobility issues

Not recommended for:

  • People afraid of heights
  • Those with heart conditions or limited mobility
  • Very young children

Booking the Experience

You can book directly through Tongabezi’s Livingstone Island Tours—the only authorized operator. Prices vary by time of day and season.

Approximate 2025 rates:

  • Morning visit (with breakfast): USD $115–$130
  • Midday visit (with lunch): USD $140–$160
  • Afternoon visit (with high tea): USD $120–$135

Advance booking is highly recommended, especially during peak months (September to November).

Tips to Make the Most of It

  • Book early – Tours fill up fast, especially during high season.
  • Take the morning tour for fewer crowds and better lighting for photos.
  • Use a GoPro or waterproof phone pouch for edge shots.
  • Listen to your guide—they know the river’s behavior and your safety depends on it.
  • Embrace the moment—don’t overthink, just enjoy the thrill!

Extend Your Adventure

While at Victoria Falls, consider adding:

  • Helicopter flights over the falls
  • White-water rafting on the Zambezi
  • Sunset river cruises
  • Bungee jumping from the Victoria Falls Bridge
  • Wildlife safaris in nearby Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park

Devil’s Pool is just one part of a broader adventure experience around the Victoria Falls region.
