Game Safaris in Murchison Falls National Park

Game Safaris in Murchison Falls National Park: Uganda’s Big Game Destination

Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda’s largest and oldest conservation area, home to some of Africa’s most iconic wildlife and dramatic scenery. Located in the northwest of the country, this park offers true big game safari experiences, combined with the stunning power of the Nile River crashing through a narrow gorge at Murchison Falls.

If you want to see elephants, lions, giraffes, hippos, and more in one place—this is where to go.

What Makes Murchison Falls Unique?

Murchison is the only park in Uganda where you can enjoy a full savannah safari and boat-based game viewing along the Nile River. Its combination of landscapes—woodland, open grassland, riverbanks, and forest—supports a wide range of animals and birds.

The centerpiece is Murchison Falls, where the Nile squeezes through a 7-meter gap and plunges 45 meters below. The mist, roar, and rainbow-filled spray are unforgettable.

Wildlife You Can Expect to See

The park is home to over 76 mammal species and 450 bird species. Some of the stars include:

  • Elephants and buffalo in large herds
  • Rothschild’s giraffes—rare and abundant in this park
  • Lions and leopards (best seen in the northern sector)
  • Hippos and crocodiles in the Nile
  • Antelope species: Uganda kob, waterbuck, oribi, and hartebeest
  • Birdlife: Shoebill stork, saddle-billed stork, fish eagle, kingfishers

Game Drive Experience

Game drives are done in 4×4 vehicles, usually early morning or late afternoon when animals are active. The best area is the northern bank of the Nile, reached by ferry at Paraa or via the new bridge.

  • Morning drive: Spot predators and grazers before the heat sets in
  • Evening drive: Beautiful sunsets and active night animals
  • Night drives (with special arrangements): See hyenas, genets, and bush babies

Guided drives with professional rangers increase your chances of sightings and provide great interpretation.

Boat Safari on the Nile

The Victoria Nile launch cruise is a must-do. Boats travel upstream to the base of Murchison Falls or downstream toward the delta, where the river empties into Lake Albert.

What you’ll see:

  • Dozens of hippos lounging in the river
  • Nile crocodiles sunbathing along the banks
  • Elephants and buffalo coming to drink
  • Birdlife including herons, bee-eaters, and fish eagles

For serious birders, the Nile Delta cruise offers a chance to spot the rare shoebill stork.

Hike to the Top of the Falls

After a boat trip to the base, many visitors hike up to the Top of the Falls. The trail climbs alongside the rushing water, offering dramatic views and photo opportunities.

This hike takes about 45 minutes and rewards you with an incredible up-close view of the thunderous waterfall from above.

Other Safari Activities in Murchison Falls

  • Chimpanzee tracking in Budongo Forest (southern section of the park)
  • Sport fishing on the Nile, targeting Nile perch
  • Hot air balloon safaris for an aerial view of the savannah (offered by a few operators)
  • Birding walks in Rabongo and Kaniyo Pabidi forests

Plan Your Safari

Before you go:

  1. Best time to visit: December to February and June to September (dry seasons)
  2. Park entry fees: $45 for foreign non-residents (per 24 hours)
  3. Vehicle required: 4×4 is essential, especially in the rainy season
  4. Accommodation options: Ranges from luxury lodges like Paraa Safari Lodge to budget bandas near Red Chilli Rest Camp
  5. Duration: 2 to 3 days is ideal for full game drives, boat safari, and Top of the Falls hike

Working with a licensed tour operator ensures you get the most out of your visit. Many include Murchison Falls in larger itineraries alongside Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary or Kibale Forest.
