Nkuringo Gorilla Permits and Safaris: What You Need to Know
Nkuringo, located in the southern sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, is one of Uganda’s most scenic and rewarding gorilla trekking destinations. With misty hills, deep forests, and a small number of visitors, Nkuringo offers a more remote and intimate experience with mountain gorillas.
But before you trek through this beautiful region, you need to understand the permit system, what safaris involve, and how to plan a successful trip.

What Is Nkuringo Known For?
Nkuringo is famous for its habituated gorilla families, including the Nkuringo, Bushaho, and Christmas groups. These gorillas live on steeper terrain compared to other regions in Bwindi, making the trek more challenging — but incredibly rewarding.
The area is also known for its spectacular views over the Virunga Volcanoes, rural walking trails, and rich cultural encounters with the Bakiga people.
Gorilla Permits for Nkuringo
To trek gorillas in Nkuringo, you must have a gorilla permit issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). This permit grants you one hour with a habituated gorilla family under the guidance of expert trackers and rangers.
Permit Cost:
- Foreign non-residents: $800 USD
- Foreign residents (with work permits): $700 USD
- East African citizens: UGX 300,000
Permits are the same price across all Bwindi sectors (Nkuringo, Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga) but are sector-specific — meaning you must trek in the area written on your permit.
Booking Advice:
- Book 3–6 months in advance, especially for travel during the dry seasons (June–Sept and Dec–Feb).
- Use a trusted tour operator or book directly through UWA.
- Consider combining gorilla permits with a multi-day safari package for better value.
Nkuringo Gorilla Safaris
Many travelers choose a full safari package that includes the permit, accommodation, transport, guide, and meals.
What’s Included:
- 3- to 5-day itineraries
- Pickup from Kampala, Entebbe, or Kigali
- Lodging in lodges or eco-camps in Nkuringo
- Cultural experiences (e.g., village visits, traditional dance)
- Optional walking safaris or birding tours
Nkuringo is close to Rushaga, so some safaris include optional treks in either sector. You can also request a gorilla habituation experience (four hours with researchers) at nearby Rushaga.
Why Choose Nkuringo?
- Less crowded than Buhoma and Rushaga
- Scenic terrain for photographers and nature lovers
- Excellent for active travelers who enjoy physical hikes
- Deep connections with local communities and culture
- Access to off-the-beaten-path lodges and trails
However, note that the terrain is steep and demanding — ideal for fit hikers but less suitable for those with mobility issues.
How to Get to Nkuringo
Nkuringo can be accessed in several ways:
- By road from Kampala or Entebbe: Around 10–11 hours
- By road from Kigali (Rwanda): 5–6 hours via Cyanika border
- By air: Daily domestic flights to Kisoro Airstrip, then a 2-hour drive to Nkuringo
Most safari operators handle all transport logistics, including 4×4 vehicles for park access.
Plan Your Safari
If you want a more secluded gorilla trekking experience, Nkuringo is a top choice. Book your permit early, travel with a reliable operator, and prepare for a trek that is both challenging and deeply rewarding.
This is where the raw beauty of Uganda meets the unmatched thrill of meeting mountain gorillas face-to-face.
