Nkuringo is famous for its habituated gorilla families, including the Nkuringo, Bushaho, and Christmas groups. These gorillas live on steeper terrain compared to other regions in Bwindi, making the trek more challenging — but incredibly rewarding.
The area is also known for its spectacular views over the Virunga Volcanoes, rural walking trails, and rich cultural encounters with the Bakiga people.
Gorilla Permits for Nkuringo
To trek gorillas in Nkuringo, you must have a gorilla permit issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). This permit grants you one hour with a habituated gorilla family under the guidance of expert trackers and rangers.

- Foreign residents (with work permits): $700 USD
- East African citizens: UGX 300,000
Permits are the same price across all Bwindi sectors (Nkuringo, Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga) but are sector-specific — meaning you must trek in the area written on your permit.

- Book 3–6 months in advance, especially for travel during the dry seasons (June–Sept and Dec–Feb).
- Use a trusted tour operator or book directly through UWA.
- Consider combining gorilla permits with a multi-day safari package for better value.
Nkuringo Gorilla Safaris
