Notable Silverbacks and Their Families in Bwindi
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is divided into four major sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo. Each sector has several habituated gorilla families, with dominant silverbacks leading them.
Buhoma Sector
This is the most famous and the oldest sector of Bwindi, home to some of the first habituated gorilla families.
- Mwirima – Rushengura Family
Mwirima was a well-known silverback who originally belonged to the Habinyanja family. However, he later split to form his own group, Rushengura, in 2002. Mwirima was known for his calm nature and strong leadership. The family remains one of the most popular groups for trekking in Buhoma. - Makara – Mubare Family
The Mubare family is the oldest habituated gorilla group in Bwindi, first trekked in 1993. It was initially led by Ruhondeza, but after his passing, Makara took over leadership. Under Makara’s rule, the group has grown, maintaining its status as an easy-to-track and peaceful family.
Ruhija Sector
This sector is located on the eastern side of Bwindi and is home to some fascinating gorilla groups.
- Mukiza – Mukiza Family
Mukiza, a young and strong silverback, leads the Mukiza family. This group was once part of the Kyaguliro family, but after a power struggle in 2016, Mukiza broke away to form his own troop. He is known for his intelligence and gentle leadership style. - Rukara – Kyaguliro Family
The Kyaguliro family originally had a dominant silverback named Rukina, but after his sudden passing in 2015, leadership shifted to Rukara. This group is mainly dedicated to research and conservation studies.
Rushaga Sector
Rushaga has the highest number of habituated gorilla families in Bwindi and is known for having large groups.
- Mishaya – Mishaya Family
Mishaya was a strong and aggressive silverback who broke away from the Nshongi family to form his own group. He was known for his willingness to engage in fights to protect and expand his troop. - Bweza – Bweza Family
The Bweza family originated from the Nshongi group. After a series of internal disputes, Bweza left with a few members to start his own independent family. He was a calm but firm leader. - Kahungye – Kahungye Family
This family was led by a dominant silverback named Rumanzi before undergoing some restructuring. It remains one of the strong groups in Rushaga.
Nkuringo Sector
This is one of the most scenic trekking areas, with steep terrains and breathtaking views.
- Rafiki – Nkuringo Family
The famous Nkuringo family was initially led by Rafiki, a beloved silverback known for his strong leadership and gentle nature. Sadly, Rafiki was killed in 2020 by poachers, leading to a great loss for the conservation community. - Bahati – Bushaho Family
Bahati leads the Bushaho family, which formed after a split from the Nkuringo group. He is a powerful and dominant silverback, ensuring the survival of his troop.
