Overview
This 2-day Rwanda gorilla trekking safari offers a short but rewarding journey to Volcanoes National Park, home to the endangered mountain gorillas in the Virunga Mountains. The safari begins in Kigali with a city tour before traveling north to the volcanic landscapes of Musanze where Rwanda’s famous gorilla families live.
The experience allows travelers to trek through dense montane forests accompanied by expert rangers to encounter mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Along the way, visitors enjoy Rwanda’s scenic countryside, cultural experiences, and the unforgettable moment of observing gorillas up close in the wild.

Your safari begins with pick-up from Kigali International Airport or your hotel in Kigali by your professional driver-guide. The day starts with a short Kigali city tour, which may include a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial at Gisozi, local craft markets, and cultural centers that provide insight into Rwanda’s history and modern development.
After the city exploration, begin the scenic drive north toward Volcanoes National Park in Musanze District, formerly known as Ruhengeri. The journey takes approximately 2–3 hours and passes through Rwanda’s rolling hills and beautiful rural landscapes.
In the afternoon, visitors may explore the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village, where local communities share traditional dances, cultural practices, and stories about life around the Virunga Mountains.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking – Return to Kigali
After an early breakfast, transfer to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters in Kinigi for the gorilla trekking briefing conducted by park rangers. During the briefing, visitors are informed about the trekking rules, safety guidelines, and expected behavior when encountering the gorillas.
Accompanied by experienced guides and trackers, you then enter the rainforest to search for a habituated gorilla family. The trek can last anywhere from one to several hours depending on the gorillas’ location, as they move freely within the forest.
Once the gorillas are located, visitors spend one unforgettable hour observing them as they interact, feed, and move through their natural habitat.
After the trek, return to the lodge for lunch before beginning the drive back to Kigali. Arrival is usually in the late afternoon where you will be dropped off at the airport or your hotel.
