Getting to Bwindi Forest National Park in Uganda

Getting to Bwindi Forest National Park in Uganda

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park lies in southwestern Uganda, near the borders with Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best places in the world to track endangered mountain gorillas. Getting there requires some planning, but the journey is part of the adventure.

Getting to Bwindi Forest National Park

Main Entry Points to Bwindi

You can access Bwindi through four trailheads: Buhoma (north), Ruhija (east), Rushaga and Nkuringo (south). The route you take depends on your chosen sector, arrival city, and travel preferences.

Option 1: By Road from Entebbe or Kampala

Traveling from Entebbe or Kampala to Bwindi by road takes 8 to 10 hours, depending on traffic and the gorilla trekking sector.

  • Kampala/Entebbe to Buhoma or Ruhija: Drive via Masaka, Mbarara, and Kabale.
  • To Rushaga or Nkuringo: Branch off through Kisoro.

This route lets you stop at Lake Mburo National Park or Igongo Cultural Centre. A 4×4 Land Cruiser is highly recommended due to the rough terrain leading into Bwindi.

Option 2: By Air from Entebbe to Kihihi or Kisoro

For faster travel, fly from Entebbe International Airport to:

  • Kihihi Airstrip (for Buhoma and Ruhija sectors)
  • Kisoro Airstrip (for Rushaga and Nkuringo sectors)

Flights take about 1 to 1.5 hours. Upon landing, a 4×4 vehicle transfers you to your lodge. Book flights in advance, as seats are limited.

Option 3: From Kigali, Rwanda

Many travelers arrive through Kigali International Airport, Rwanda’s capital. This option is quicker than coming from Kampala.

  • Kigali to Bwindi takes 4 to 5 hours by road.
  • Border crossing is through Gatuna or Chanika.
  • This route is ideal for accessing the southern sectors: Rushaga and Nkuringo.

Ensure you have an East African Tourist Visa or separate entry visas for both countries.
