How Long Does Chimpanzee Tracking Take in Rwanda?

Chimpanzee tracking in Rwanda is one of the most thrilling wildlife experiences in East Africa. You get a chance to hike through beautiful tropical forests and come face-to-face with our closest relatives in the wild.

This activity happens in Nyungwe Forest National Park, a biodiversity hotspot in southwestern Rwanda. The park is home to over 500 chimpanzees, with two habituated groups available for tracking.

how long is chimpanzee trekking

Duration of the Tracking Experience

The total chimpanzee tracking experience takes about 2 to 6 hours. The duration depends on where the chimps are on the day of your trek.

  • The actual time with the chimps is strictly limited to 1 hour once you locate them.
  • The trek to find them may take 30 minutes to 4 hours depending on their location and the terrain.

Chimps move fast and cover large distances. Rangers start tracking them early in the morning using vocal calls and trail signs. Treks usually start around 5:00 AM to 6:00 AM.

Is the Hike Difficult?

The tracking route can be moderately challenging. You may hike through steep slopes, thick vegetation, and slippery trails. A reasonable level of fitness helps, but anyone in good health can manage the trek.

You’ll be guided by experienced rangers who know the forest well. They help you navigate safely and increase your chances of a successful encounter.

Best Time to Go

Chimpanzee tracking is available all year round. However, the dry seasons (June to September and December to February) offer easier hiking conditions.

During wet months, the forest becomes slippery, but the chimps may stay closer to the trails as food becomes more abundant.

What to Expect During the Hour with Chimps

When you reach the chimps, your guide gives you the green light to start observing and photographing them. The hour flies by as you watch them feed, groom, play, and move through the trees.

Stay quiet, avoid sudden movements, and do not try to get too close. These rules help protect both you and the chimpanzees.

Plan Your Safari

Chimpanzee tracking in Rwanda takes between 2 to 6 hours and offers a rewarding, once-in-a-lifetime experience. Prepare well, follow your guide’s instructions, and soak in the beauty of Nyungwe Forest. It’s an unforgettable adventure for any nature lover.
