Uganda Wildlife Education Centre

Uganda Wildlife Education Centre—Where Conservation Meets Discovery

Located on the shores of Lake Victoria in Entebbe, the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (UWEC) is more than a zoo—it’s a sanctuary for Uganda’s rich biodiversity and a center for public education on conservation. Established in 1952, this iconic destination blends leisure, learning, and wildlife conservation into one unforgettable experience.

A Legacy of Conservation

Originally started as a reception center for wild animals that were sick, orphaned, or confiscated from illegal trade, the center grew into a zoo during the 1960s. In 1994, it was transformed into the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre Trust, with a mission focused on wildlife conservation, research, and education.

Today, it serves as both a sanctuary and a teaching ground, offering an up-close introduction to Uganda’s native species and ecological challenges.

Wildlife and Natural Habitats

The UWEC is home to a wide array of animals representing Uganda’s major ecosystems. Wildlife is housed in enclosures that mimic natural environments to ensure comfort and encourage natural behavior.

Visitors can expect to see:

  • African lions, leopards, and hyenas
  • Chimpanzees, olive baboons, and other primates
  • Elephants, giraffes, zebras, and Uganda kobs
  • Rare species like the shoebill stork and crested crane (Uganda’s national bird)
  • Reptiles such as Nile crocodiles and pythons

The facility features recreated ecosystems such as wetland habitats, savannah grasslands, and forest trails, allowing guests to experience Uganda’s wildlife without leaving the city.

Education and Community Engagement

UWEC is deeply rooted in public education. Through school visits, volunteer programs, and community outreach, the centre raises awareness about endangered species, wildlife conservation, and responsible environmental behavior.

Educational services include:

  • Guided school tours aligned with the national curriculum
  • Wildlife lectures and conservation seminars
  • Interpretation centers and interactive signage throughout the zoo

UWEC also supports training for wildlife veterinarians and conservation biologists through collaborations with local and international institutions.

Visitor Experience

Whether you are traveling solo, with kids, or as part of a group, UWEC offers several ways to make your visit memorable:

  • Guided Wildlife Tours: Knowledgeable guides walk you through each section of the park, sharing insights on animal behavior, conservation efforts, and cultural relevance.
  • Behind-the-Scenes Experiences: Get involved with feeding animals, cleaning enclosures, or shadowing a zookeeper during the “Keeper for a Day” program.
  • Boat Trips on Lake Victoria: Enjoy scenic views and birdwatching on guided boat rides from the center’s lakeside docks.
  • Nature Walks: Trails through indigenous forest patches highlight medicinal plants, bird species, and butterfly varieties.

Facilities and Accommodation

UWEC offers a variety of amenities to enhance visitor comfort:

  • On-site Restaurant: Serves both local Ugandan cuisine and international dishes.
  • Children’s Play Area: A safe space for kids to play while adults explore.
