Nyandungu Eco-Park – Kigali’s Urban Green Escape
In the heart of Kigali lies a transformed treasure—Nyandungu Eco-Park. Once a degraded wetland, the area is now a peaceful oasis where nature and city life meet. With its forests, walking trails, ponds, and cultural gardens, the park offers a calm retreat for locals and visitors alike. It’s a symbol of Rwanda’s vision for green, sustainable cities.
From Damaged Wetland to Eco Paradise
For years, the Nyandungu wetland faced damage from sand mining, farming, and grazing. In 2016, Rwanda’s government stepped in with a major restoration plan. The Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA), supported by the Rwanda Green Fund, led the work.
More than 17,000 trees were planted. Wetland ponds were reshaped to hold and clean water. Native plants were reintroduced to revive the ecosystem. The result is a 121-hectare green space that blends ecology, culture, and recreation.
What to See and Do
Walking through Nyandungu is a sensory experience. Long trails wind through forests and gardens. Birds chirp in the trees. Butterflies flutter across flowering paths. The air feels cooler and fresher than the city nearby.
The Medicinal Garden is one of the highlights. It features traditional Rwandan healing plants, each labeled for visitors to learn from. Alongside this is the Pope’s Garden, a quiet place built to honor Pope John Paul II’s visit in 1990. There’s space to sit, read, or reflect.
Bird lovers will enjoy the park’s growing list of bird species—over 100 recorded so far. From bright weavers to grey parrots, the diversity is impressive. Artificial ponds like Pond Muhazi and Pond Ihema support aquatic life and offer beautiful photo spots.
Trails, Bikes, and Relaxation
Nyandungu is made for walking and biking. Over 10 kilometers of trails pass through the park. Visitors can rent bicycles and explore at their own pace. There are picnic areas, benches, and shaded spots for breaks along the way.
If you want a bite to eat, the Nyandungu Restaurant is right inside the park. Run in partnership with Bourbon Coffee, it serves local dishes, coffee, and fresh snacks.
A Model for Green Cities
Nyandungu isn’t just a park—it’s a living example of urban conservation. Its ponds and forests help cool the city, clean the air, and reduce flooding. The project created over 4,000 green jobs and gave new skills to people who now care for the space.
The park also supports education. Schools and universities bring students here to learn about plants, water systems, and nature protection. Signs around the park offer facts and lessons for self-guided learning.
When and How to Visit
The park is located along KK 3 Road, close to Kigali International Airport. It’s open daily from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Entry is free for everyone.
Come early for the best bird sightings or late afternoon to enjoy the golden light over the ponds. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water if you plan to walk or bike.
Nyandungu Eco-Park is proof that damaged land can bloom again. It’s a place where Kigali breathes—a blend of nature, culture, and calm. Whether you’re walking through the forest, spotting birds, or enjoying a quiet lunch, the park gives you space to slow down. It’s one of Kigali’s finest examples of green growth and peaceful living.
