Musanze Caves in Rwanda – Open for Year-Round Guided Tours

Rwanda’s Musanze Caves are open for tours. The Rwanda Development Board officially opened them to tourism between 2013 and 2014. These caves are located near Musanze Town, just outside Volcanoes National Park. They are some of the most accessible caves in the country.

Formed more than 65 million years ago, the caves resulted from lava flows from the nearby Virunga volcanoes. As the lava cooled, it left behind extensive underground tunnels. The cave system stretches about 1.25 miles (2 km) and features over 30 natural entrances, created by roof collapses.

What to Expect on a Tour

Visitors walk through paved paths and stairways. The main tour covers four chambers, all safely navigable. A professional guide provides safety gear and shares the cave’s geological and cultural history.

The caves once served as shelters during conflict, including the 1994 genocide. Inside, you’ll notice the cool, damp air. Stalactites hang above. Bats flutter across dim corridors. Dripping water adds to the natural ambiance.

Each tour lasts between 2 to 3 hours. The route allows time for walking, listening to stories, and photography.
