Kisoro District

Kisoro District

Kisoro District
Kisoro District

Kisoro District, located in southwestern Uganda, is a breathtaking region known for its stunning landscapes, diverse culture, and incredible wildlife. Bordering Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Kisoro is often referred to as the “Gateway to the Gorilla Highlands,” as it provides easy access to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. With its volcanic mountains, crater lakes, and rich cultural heritage, Kisoro is a must-visit destination for nature lovers, adventure seekers, and those interested in cultural tourism.

Geography and Climate

Kisoro is a mountainous region with elevations ranging from 1,200 to 4,127 meters above sea level. It is part of the Virunga Mountains, a chain of volcanoes that extend into Rwanda and the DRC. The district experiences a cool, temperate climate due to its high altitude, with temperatures ranging between 10°C and 24°C throughout the year. Rainfall is common, particularly between March–May and September–November, making the dry seasons the best time for trekking and hiking.

Tourist Attractions in Kisoro District

  1. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Kisoro is home to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, one of Uganda’s top destinations for mountain gorilla trekking. The park protects part of the Virunga Massif, a critical habitat for endangered gorillas. In addition to gorilla trekking, visitors can track the Golden Monkeys, another rare primate species found in the park.

  1. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (Southern Sectors)

Though Bwindi spans multiple districts, the Rushaga and Nkuringo sectors of the park fall within Kisoro’s vicinity. These areas offer some of the best gorilla trekking experiences and are more accessible from Kisoro than from other major towns.

  1. The Virunga Volcanoes

Kisoro is surrounded by three of the eight Virunga Volcanoes:

Mount Muhabura (4,127m) – The second-highest volcano, known for its steep trails and stunning summit views.

Gahinga Mount (3,474m) – A relatively easy hike with a beautiful crater swamp at the top.

Mount Sabyinyo (3,669m) – Famous for its “three peaks” and the chance to stand in Uganda, Rwanda, and DRC at the same time.

These volcanoes offer incredible hiking experiences, with trails leading through bamboo forests and alpine zones.

  1. Lake Mutanda

One of Uganda’s most beautiful lakes, Lake Mutanda, is located in Kisoro. Surrounded by rolling hills and volcanoes, the lake is perfect for canoeing, fishing, birdwatching, and island exploration. Several islands on the lake have rich cultural and historical significance.

  1. Echuya Forest Reserve

Located between Kisoro and Kabale, Echuya Forest is a biodiversity hotspot with endemic bird species, rare plants, and primates like blue monkeys and colobus monkeys. It is a great destination for nature walks and birdwatching.

  1. Batwa Cultural Experience

The Batwa Pygmies were the original forest dwellers of the Virunga region. After being displaced from their ancestral lands, they now offer cultural experiences where visitors learn about their hunting traditions, medicinal plants, and storytelling.

  1. Kisoro Town and Local Markets

Kisoro town serves as a commercial hub and an entry point to many attractions. The weekly markets, particularly the cross-border markets with Rwandan and Congolese traders, are a great place to experience local life, buy crafts, and taste traditional foods.

How to Get to Kisoro

By Road

From Kampala (Via Kabale), Kisoro is about 460 km (8-10 hours drive) from Kampala via the Kampala-Mbarara-Kabale-Kisoro route. The last stretch from Kabale to Kisoro offers scenic views of rolling hills and valleys.

From Kigali, Rwanda, Kisoro is just 140 km (4-5 hours drive) from Kigali via the Cyanika border, making it an excellent entry point for travelers coming from Rwanda.

By Air

Daily domestic flights are available from Entebbe Airport to Kisoro Airstrip, operated by Aerolink Uganda.

Best Time to Visit Kisoro

The best time to visit Kisoro is during the dry seasons (June–August and December–February), when hiking and trekking conditions are best. However, gorilla trekking is possible year-round, as the experience is not heavily affected by weather conditions.
