Karisoke Research Center

Karisoke Research Center

The Karisoke Research Center stands as a beacon of gorilla conservation and scientific research in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park. Established in 1967 by Dian Fossey, the center has played a critical role in protecting the endangered mountain gorilla population. Over the decades, Karisoke has contributed to anti-poaching efforts, ecological research, and education, shaping modern conservation strategies in Africa.

The History and Legacy of Dian Fossey

Dian Fossey, an American primatologist, founded Karisoke to study and protect mountain gorillas. She set up camp between Mount Karisimbi and Mount Bisoke, inspiring the center’s name. Fossey’s groundbreaking research shed light on gorilla behavior, social structures, and the threats they faced from poaching and habitat destruction.

Her book, Gorillas in the Mist, brought international attention to the plight of mountain gorillas. Tragically, Fossey was murdered in 1985, but her legacy continues through the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, which operates Karisoke to this day.

Gorilla Conservation and Research

Karisoke Research Center remains at the forefront of mountain gorilla conservation. Scientists and conservationists conduct daily monitoring of gorilla families, tracking their health, movements, and interactions. The data collected helps in formulating strategies to protect gorillas from disease outbreaks, habitat loss, and illegal wildlife trade.

Anti-poaching units, supported by Karisoke, patrol Volcanoes National Park to remove snares and apprehend poachers. The center also works with local communities, promoting education and sustainable livelihoods to reduce human-wildlife conflicts.

Visiting the Karisoke Research Center

Travelers interested in gorilla conservation can visit the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund’s headquarters in Musanze, Rwanda. Here, visitors learn about Fossey’s work, ongoing research, and conservation projects. A trek to Dian Fossey’s grave and former research site in the mountains provides a deeper connection to her enduring mission.
