How to Get to Mabira Forest.

How to Get to Mabira Forest

Mabira Forest is one of Uganda’s largest surviving natural rainforests. It spans over 300 square kilometers and sits between the bustling cities of Kampala and Jinja. The forest is home to over 300 bird species, rare primates like the grey-cheeked mangabey, and a rich canopy that supports ecotourism. Its scenic trails, zip-lining adventures, and peaceful atmosphere make it a favorite for nature lovers, weekend travelers, and birdwatchers alike.

How to get to Mabira Forest

Whether you are looking for a short escape from the city or a longer retreat into nature, Mabira offers an immersive experience in the heart of Uganda’s central region.

How to Get There

Mabira Forest lies about 60 kilometers from Kampala and 20 kilometers from Jinja, along the Kampala–Jinja highway. The main access point is through Najjembe Trading Centre, close to Lugazi town.

If you are driving from Kampala, head east via the A109 highway. The trip takes around 1 to 1.5 hours depending on traffic. From Jinja, drive westward on the same highway. It takes about 30 minutes.

Public transport is also available. Board a Jinja-bound matatu from Kampala’s Old Taxi Park and ask to get off at Najjembe. From there, take a boda boda to the Mabira Forest Eco-Tourism Centre or Griffin Falls Camp.

Tour operators also offer day trips to the forest, especially from Kampala or Jinja. These typically include round-trip transport, guided walks, and optional meals or zip-lining.

Best Time to Visit

Mabira Forest is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit is during the dry seasons: December to February and June to August. Trails stay dry, and wildlife is more active during these months. It’s also easier to enjoy activities like nature walks, birding, and zip-lining without weather disruptions.

Rainy seasons—March to May and September to November—bring lush greenery but make the trails slippery. If you travel during these months, carry waterproof gear and good hiking shoes. Short showers are common, but forest visits remain possible with flexibility.

Where to Stay Near Mabira Forest

For a stay close to nature, Rainforest Lodge Mabira offers eco-luxury in the heart of the forest. Each cottage sits privately among the trees and includes guided walks, great food, and quiet surroundings.

If you want an adventurous feel, Griffin Falls Camp provides budget-friendly bandas and tent options. The camp’s highlight is the zip-line that glides above the forest canopy—perfect for thrill-seekers.

Travelers on tighter budgets can stay in Lugazi town, which has several guesthouses within a 15-minute drive of the forest. You’ll find basic yet clean accommodation options, ideal for day trips into the forest.

Another option is to stay in Jinja, especially if you plan to combine your forest trip with activities on the Nile River. Jinja offers a wider range of hotels, lodges, and backpacker hostels.

Plan your visit to Mabira Forest.

Mabira Forest is Uganda’s most accessible rainforest, yet it still offers an authentic nature experience. The journey is easy whether you travel from Kampala or Jinja. Choose your timing wisely, especially during the dry season, and book your stay close to the forest for a deeper connection with its wild beauty. Whether you hike, birdwatch, or zip-line, Mabira gives you nature without the need for long travel. Would you like a custom itinerary added for a weekend in Mabira Forest?
