Getting to Murchison Falls National Park

Getting to Murchison Falls National Park

Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda’s largest and oldest protected area. It lies in the northwestern region of the country, spanning several districts including Masindi, Buliisa, and Nwoya. The park is famous for boat cruises on the Nile, game drives, and the thunderous Murchison Falls.

Reaching the park is possible by both road and air.

Getting to Murchison Falls National Park

By Road from Kampala or Entebbe

Murchison Falls lies about 305 kilometers from Kampala and roughly 340 kilometers from Entebbe. The drive takes 5 to 6 hours depending on traffic and road conditions.

Main Route:

  • Kampala – Luweero – Nakasongola – Masindi – Kichumbanyobo or Bugungu Gate

You can also reach the park through the northern gates:

  • Kampala – Karuma – Purongo – Tangi or Chobe Gate

A 4×4 Land Cruiser is highly recommended. Some routes inside the park can be slippery or dusty depending on the season.

Entry Gates to the Park

Murchison Falls has five key entry gates:

  1. Kichumbanyobo Gate – Closest if coming from Masindi
  2. Bugungu Gate – Scenic route through Budongo Forest
  3. Tangi Gate – Ideal for visitors coming from Gulu or Pakwach
  4. Chobe Gate – Northern access, connects well to Karuma Bridge
  5. Wankar Gate – Less frequently used but connects well to the eastern parts

Choose your gate based on your accommodation or planned safari circuit.

By Air (Scheduled and Charter Flights)

Flying is the fastest and most comfortable way to reach Murchison Falls.

Domestic Flights:

  • Take off from Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi Airfield
  • Land at either Pakuba, Bugungu, or Chobe Airstrip

Flight time: About 1 hour

Aerolink Uganda and Bar Aviation offer daily flights. From the airstrip, a 4×4 vehicle will transfer you to your lodge or game drive.

Travel Tips

  • Book a private safari vehicle, preferably a 4×4 Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof.
  • Confirm your gate entry based on your lodge location.
  • Carry cash for park entry fees if you’re self-driving.
  • Start your journey early to avoid traffic in Kampala and Masindi.
