Getting to Lake Mburo National Park in Uganda
Lake Mburo National Park lies in western Uganda, in Kiruhura District. It’s the closest savannah park to Kampala and Entebbe. The park offers game drives, boat cruises, nature walks, and biking safaris.
Reaching the park is easy and quick by Ugandan standards.
By Road from Kampala or Entebbe
The park lies about 228 kilometers from Kampala and 260 kilometers from Entebbe. A direct road trip takes 3.5 to 4.5 hours, depending on traffic.
Main Route:
- Kampala – Mpigi – Masaka – Lyantonde – Sanga Gate (Park Entry Point)
The road is fully tarmacked up to Sanga trading center. From there, a 13 km murram road leads you into the park.
A 4×4 Land Cruiser is highly recommended, especially in rainy seasons. It offers better comfort and handling on dirt tracks inside the park.
From Mbarara or Western Uganda
If you’re coming from Mbarara, the distance is only 45 kilometers. This makes Lake Mburo a great stopover for longer safaris to Queen Elizabeth, Bwindi, or Mgahinga.
Travelers doing western circuit safaris often add a night at Lake Mburo to break up the long drive.
By Air (Charter Flights)
Though not common, charter flights to Nyakisharara Airstrip in Mbarara are possible.
- Flight time from Entebbe: About 1 hour
- From Nyakisharara to Lake Mburo: About 1 hour by road
Flights must be booked in advance and are ideal for high-end, time-conscious travelers.
Best Way to Travel
- Choose a private 4×4 Land Cruiser for flexibility and comfort.
- Combine Lake Mburo with Entebbe, Kampala, or western Uganda circuits.
- Travel with a guide who knows the park’s gates and timings.
Gate Entry Points
Lake Mburo has two main entry points:
- Sanga Gate – Most direct from Kampala
- Nshara Gate – Connects well from Mbarara or Nyakisharara Airstrip
Both gates lead into the same safari tracks and lodges.
