Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is home to nearly half of the world’s mountain gorillas, is accessible via several routes, offering both road and air travel options.

Whether you prefer a scenic drive or a quick flight, there are convenient ways to reach this incredible destination.

One can get to the park through use of;

By Road;

You can access Bwindi through multiple road routes, depending on your starting point.

The drive from Kampala via the Masaka-Mbarara road takes approximately 6 to 8 hours.

From Queen Elizabeth National Park, it’s a shorter 2 to 3-hour journey. If you’re coming from Kabale town, it’s only 1 to 2 hours driving southwards.

All these routes converge at Butogota, which is 17 kilometers from the Buhoma entrance gate, the main access point into the park.

By Air;

For those opting to fly, you can depart from either Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi Airfield, located near Kampala, to Nyakabande Airstrip in Kisoro.

The park’s northern section is served by airfields in Kihihi and Kayonza. If you’re heading to the southern areas of the park, there are additional airstrips at Mishaya, Nkuringo and Nshongi for easy access.

  • From Queen Elizabeth National Park (Mweya) to Kihihi, then to the Buhoma trailhead.
  • From Kampala via Kabale to Kanungu, then to the Buhoma trailhead.
  • From Kampala via Ntungamo and Rukungiri, continuing to Kihihi and Buhoma.
  • From Kampala via Kabale to Ruhija, then to the Buhoma sector.
  • From Kampala via Kabale, ending at the Nkuringo trailhead.
