Kapkwai Gate sits near the popular Sipi Falls in Kapchorwa District. The gate serves as the main access point for those staying in the Sipi area.

- Forest exploration trails (ideal for birding and nature walks)
The Kapkwai Exploration Center, located near the gate, offers trail information, guides, and ranger support.

Kapkwata Gate – Piswa Trailhead (Northern Slope)
Kapkwata Gate lies further north in the Kween District. It marks the start of the Piswa Trail, which leads through podocarpus forest and high-altitude heath.
This trail ascends more gently and suits travelers interested in wildlife and scenic camping experiences. You pass through hot springs, caves, and remote forest patches.
Best for: multi-day treks, scenic landscapes, less traffic, and wildlife.

Budadiri Gate – Sasa Trailhead (Western Slope)
Budadiri Gate stands near Mbale town, in Sironko District. It gives access to the Sasa Trail, the most direct and steepest route to Wagagai Peak (4,321m).
Travelers often start here if they want to summit quickly. The trail runs through Bamasaba farmland, muddy forest, and mossy bamboo zones.

Suuam Gate—Eastern Lowland Entry (Less Developed)

Few tourists use this route, making it perfect for explorers seeking solitude and authentic village experiences. Suuam connects with routes into Kapchorwa and Kenya’s Mount Elgon National Park.
Best for: Remote treks, community visits, and birdwatching.
Entry Requirements and Park Fees
All gates require tickets issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). Hire a UWA ranger for guided treks and safety.
- Foreign non-resident: $40 per adult/day
- Foreign resident: $30 per adult/day
- East African citizen: UGX 20,000 per adult/day
- Children and students: Discounted rates apply
How to Reach the Gates
Travelers can fly into Entebbe, then drive or take a domestic flight to Soroti Airstrip or Mbale. Road trips from Kampala to Mbale take 5–6 hours.
- Kapkwai Gate: Drive 6 km from Sipi trading center (from Mbale: 1.5 hours)
- Kapkwata Gate: Access from Kapchorwa–Amudat Road
- Budadiri Gate: Reach from Mbale town via Budadiri trading center (about 1 hour)
- Suuam Gate: Remote drive via Bukwo; best with 4×4 and local guidance
