Difference Between Rwanda’s and Uganda’s Gorillas
Both Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda are world-renowned destinations for gorilla trekking. However, while both parks offer an opportunity to see mountain gorillas, differences exist in the terrain, trekking experience, and gorilla populations.

Gorilla Species and Subspecies
Both parks are home to the mountain gorilla (Gorilla beringei beringei), a subspecies of the eastern gorilla. These critically endangered primates live in small, tight-knit groups led by a dominant silverback.
However, some researchers suggest that gorillas in Bwindi show slight genetic variations from those in Volcanoes National Park, possibly indicating a unique subpopulation.

Terrain and Trekking Difficulty
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park has a dense forest with steep ridges and thick undergrowth. The rugged terrain makes trekking more challenging, as the paths are often narrow and covered with vegetation. The altitude varies between 1,160m and 2,607m above sea level.
Volcanoes National Park has more open bamboo forests and volcanic slopes. The trekking paths are wider and less dense, making hikes somewhat easier compared to Bwindi. However, the altitude is higher, ranging from 2,400m to 4,507m, which can make trekking strenuous due to thinner air.

Gorilla Families and Population
Bwindi has about 459 mountain gorillas, with over 20 habituated gorilla groups available for trekking in four sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo.
Volcanoes have about 380 mountain gorillas, with 12 habituated groups available for trekking.
The higher number of gorilla families in Bwindi means more trekking permits are available compared to volcanoes.

Gorilla Behavior
Gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest tend to move more through thick vegetation, making sightings slightly more challenging. However, their behavior remains similar to those in Volcanoes National Park.
In Volcanoes National Park, gorillas often stay in open bamboo forests, making photography and viewing easier.

Accessibility
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is located in southwestern Uganda, about 8–9 hours by road from Entebbe/Kampala. Alternatively, visitors can take a domestic flight to Kihihi or Kisoro airstrips, followed by a short drive.
Volcanoes National Park is just a 2-3 hour drive from Kigali, making it more accessible for short trips or last-minute bookings.

Uganda (Bwindi): A gorilla permit costs $800 for foreign non-residents, $700 for foreign residents, and UGX 300,000 for East African citizens.
Rwanda (Volcanoes): A gorilla permit costs $1,500 for all foreign tourists.
